A
E
CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MINUTES - REGULAR MEETING
November 6. 1985
ROLL CALL:
The regular meeting of the North Olmsted Civil Service Commission was called to
order by Chairman Philip Huffman at 8:10 p.m. In attendance were Dean McKay,
Pat Bahas, Chief VanKuren and Sandi Westerfeld.
OLD BUSINESS:
Ritter Review:
Fire candidate Mr. Ritter requested and was granted a review of his removal from
the certified list. The facts of this matter were reviewed before Mr. Ritter
attended the meeting at 8:30 p.m. Upon his arrival Mr. Ritter was introduced to
the members of the Commission and he then stated the following. Mr. Ritter said
that when his blood pressure readings were taken he was on a diet, was under tremendous
pressure, was not drinking enough liquids and he developed a kidney stone. The
pressure of the job interview, physical, etc., he felt, raised his blood pressure.
When read at home or by friends, his blood pressure readings are normal. His readings
at his doctor's office were 128/80 left and 128/82 right. His doctor also checked
Mr. Ritter's past readings and all have been normal. Therefore, he feels the
Commission should reconsider his removal. The Commission did note that in Dr.
Maldonado's report Mr. Ritter's highest reading was 130/90. The Commission informed
Mr. Ritter that they will contact Dr. Maldonado and get back to him as soon as
possible. The Commission then requested Secretary Westerfeld to contact Law Director
Mike Gareau as to discussion he had on previous Saturday with Dr. Maldonado regarding
Dr. Maldonado's reports to the Commission.
At this point in the meeting, Mayor Swietyniowski joined the meeting and there
followed a short discussion regarding the appointment of another Commission member.
Levendusky Removal:
Upon review of the report from Kaiser Hospital which was sent at Mr. Levendusky's
request, the Commission affirmed their decision that he be removed from the certified
list for entry level Firefighter due to high blood pressure and Secretary Westerfeld
was instructed to inform Mr. Levendusky of their findings.
Police Department Radio Dispatcher Exam:
Secretary Westerfeld informed the Commission that everything was in order for the
upcoming exam on November 21st. There are 25 applicants accepted for the examination
and 3 refused.
Engineering Inspector:
Upon review of the job description supplied to Secretary Westerfeld for the above
captioned position, it was determined by the Commission that although this position
is Civil Service, it is not testable and the employee would be hired by Joe Schaller.
