CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION <br />NORTH OLMSTED, OHIO <br />.rte <br />CIVIL SERVICE MEETING: November 21, 1991 <br />PRESENT: Chairman Henry Robinson, Commissioner Al Kovelan, <br />Secretary,Tracy Ice <br />GUESTS: Ernest Gundy, Safety Director <br />MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING APPROVED AS READ. <br />OLD BUSINESS <br />Henry Robinson advised Mr. Gundy that the Correction Officer Test is <br />scheduled for January 8, 1992 at 7:00 pm at the North Olmsted <br />Community Cabin. The testing company who will be providing the test <br />is the International.Personnel Management Association (IPMA). <br />Al Kovelan said that this commission received a letter from the Law <br />Firm of Climaco, Climaco, Seminatore, Lefkowitz and Garofoli Co., <br />L.P.A. with regard to Donald Lester's lose of job in his <br />probationary period. This matter was referred over to our Law <br />Director and we have a letter from the Assistant Law Director which <br />basically says the same as the Commission had stated before, all <br />patrolman in the City of North Olmsted serves an 18 month probation <br />period this was established by the Civil Service Commission in 1987. <br />It is the right of each city to set up their own rules. This <br />patrolman did not last his probation period and therefore he is not <br />subject to a Civil Service hearing. This matter has been referred <br />to the Law Department and they will take it from here. <br />Mr. Gundy said that an 18 month probation period is a minimum. That <br />the Police Chief. may ask the Commission. to change the probation <br />period from 18 months from the patrolman's date of hire to 18 months <br />from the patrolman's date of on the job training. All this means is <br />that their probation period will not start until after Academy. Al <br />Kovelan mentioned that we will discuss this matter after we have a <br />full commission. <br />Henry Robinson said that Ron Wilamosky sent the commission a letter <br />with regard to Marella Varanese. It states that on May 8, 1991 the <br />American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed a <br />grievance with respect to the creation of a new confidential <br />position within the Fire Department. On July 22, 1991 Marella <br />Varanese was awarded this position. In summary, this position will <br />not be included within the bargaining unit due to the confidential <br />matter's and therefore she will have civil service coverage. <br />0 <br />
