CIVIL SERVICE MEETING MINUTES
MARCH 20-, 1995
PAGE 2
OLD BUSINESS
Dr. Huffman also said that the Air'Force use to require pilots to wear
eye glasses. These pilots flew very expensive air craft. He said,
that just because a pilot's.vision goes down hill they are not going
to get rid of that pilot after they spent all that time and money on
training him. The pilots later changed from eye glasses to the soft
contacts and found better results. Glasses can also move on the face
and then you have to look threw the glasses at an angle.
Dr. Huffman called the American Optometric Association, they sent him
Police and Fire information on a vision course in St. Louis that he
had attended. St. Louis went over their vision requirements and we
were given copies of what Dr. Huffman had for our files. These are
the National recommendation standards. They are not just what someone
thought up. Dr. Huffman feels that this requirement would be more
suitable for our city.
After all was said and done, Jim. Hines voted to change the vision
requirement, Glenn Marks 2nd it.. Tracy will type this vision standard
up. and we will use it for our next Police/Fire exam.
Dr. Huffman works across the street from the Police Station. He used
to serve on the Commission and really has an understanding as to what
we are looking at. Dr. Huffman said that he would be happy to do the
vision screening tests for candidates being screened for the Police
and Fire Departments..
The Fire Fighter's Entry Level Exam. is still on hold.
NEW BUSINESS
Jackie Smith who took our Secretarial -test attended this meeting.
Jackie said that she was hired in the Police Department for a
Secretarial II position, Jackie replaced Cheryl Sears. Later when
Cheryl Sears wanted.to return to her .job, Jackie applied for the
Building Department's Secretarial position, which was also a
Secretarial II position. Jackie was given a typing test and was
informed in writing that she did not get this job in the Building
Department. A little while later, she met with Carolyn Kasler and
Carolyn sai& that she did not get..this job because she did not type 45
wpm or better. Jackie was, at some point, then told on a Wednesday
that she would be laid -off by the end of the work day on Friday. She
received a 2 day lay-off notice.
