r'
f
VI.
Thomay suggested they move on to discuss Rule II. In section 3, there is just a typo
error. Section 3-A-1 reads "Deficient functional color perception related to the job
description" when it should read "Must possess adequate functional color perception
related to the job description". Section 3-A-2 reads "Deficiency in color perception
of such nature as to prompt ..." when it should read "Must possess adequate color
perception of such nature as to prompt..." In section 3-13, the vision standards, there
is confusion as to where to get standards or information from. Mr. Farrell indicated
that they should write to the Civil Service Commission of the State of Ohio and
inquire what their guidelines are for this. Mr. Thomay commented that he would do
that. Mr. Thomay suggested that in section 4, the Fire Chief brought up a question as
to contact lenses popping out when pressure goggles are worn. Mr. Farrell replied
that would fall under the same category because he was looking back through this
again and he doesn't know if the board is equipped to answer that. They should have
studies throughout this country as to whether these fire fighters are losing their
contacts and unable to perform. Mr. Thomay indicated that the medical qualifications
are out of date because procedures for eye corrections and so fourth have become
more technologically advanced. Section 7, there is a maximum age limit of 35 years
old. Mr. Farrell believes Cleveland has done away with the 35 -year-old restriction.
He then indicated that he would check into B and C of section 7. Mr. Thomay
suggested that part D in Section 7 is the part they changed to accommodate the
Firefighters who were still in school getting paramedic certification. Mr. Farrell
questioned why this upsets them. They have guys on this list who may not have
completed their paramedic classes, so they just get overlooked but our list is always
going to be up to date in a year or two. Mr. Thomay indicated the advantage is when
a year from now, when others are running out of candidates on their lists, we will
have some that are going to be ready to go. He then questioned the clerk 'as to how
many students are in the top ten candidates. The clerk was not sure off hand, but
thought about half were still students. Mr. Farrell commented our list would be
fresher than other city's lists. Mr. Thomay indicated they should put this section on
hold until another meeting. He then indicated that Section 8 and 9 were O.K.
Section 10, the question is whether this one meets our new software program. This
will need to be changed because the computer test is not a written test. Mr. Farrell
agreed. Mr. Thomay indicated that he would work on re -wording that. He then
suggested that Sections 11 and 12 were O.K. Mr. Farrell questioned if they could
table Rule III until the next meeting. Mr. Thomay replied yes.
R"Pfol8J;401yjIa09
J. Thomay motioned to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by P. Farrell
and unanimously approved. Meeting adjourned at 8:25pm.
JoKnn Thomay, Chairman
3
Shaun Solomon, Asst. Civil Service Secretary
