CITY OF NOR'T'H OLMSTED <br />"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" <br />CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION <br />MINUTES — JANUARY 15, 2001 <br />7:00 PM <br />"DUE TO A TECHNICAL ERROR THE MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 15, 2001 CIVIL <br />SERVICE MEETING IS WRITTEN FROM THE CLERKS NOTES" <br />I. ROLL CALL: <br />Chairman, Thomay called the meeting to order at TOOPM. <br />PRESENT: Chairman, J. Thomay and Board member L. Zolar. <br />ABSENT: Board member P. Farrell. <br />II. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES: The minutes of November 20, 2000 Civil Service meeting have <br />been submitted for approval. <br />J. Thomay motioned to approve the November 20, 2000 minutes as submitted. The motion was <br />seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously approved. <br />III. REPORTS: <br />A) There has been 8 correspondences received by the Civil Service Commission. <br />J. Thomay motioned to approve the correspondences as submitted. The motion was seconded <br />by L. Zolar and unanimously approved. <br />IV. OLD BUSINESS: <br />A) Commissioners need to address Rule III of the Civil Service Handbook. <br />Mr. Thomay announced that as all three board members where not present the board would <br />table the review of the Civil Service Handbook. <br />Fire Chief Bak and Capt. Hohenfeld were present to discuss issues of the Civil Service <br />Handbook. They would like to have the Commission address an issue which has recently come <br />up. What happens if a candidate request that his name be passed over for an interview? Is the <br />candidate removed from the list or can he/she be passed over and remain on the list? The Fire <br />department would also like to know exactly what constitutes a background check. They would <br />like to see a Definition for the word "background check" added to the handbook. Should the <br />appointing authority be receiving a copy of the background check information that's obtained by <br />the Police and Personal departments? Should the background checks be the same for both entry <br />level Police and Fire personal? An issue as to whether or not the Leeds's Machine should be <br />used for entry-level fire candidates background checks as well as Police candidates was <br />discussed. Mr. Thomay indicated that the board would address the Fire Departments concerns <br />at their next regularly scheduled meeting when all members would be present. <br />V. NEW BUSINESS: <br />A) The Commissioners need to make a motion on the testing company chosen as well as give the <br />clerk authority to approve the contracts. This will start the procedure for the Radio Central <br />Dispatchers and the Correction Officers examinations. <br />
