N <br />b <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" <br />CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION <br />MINUTES — NOVEMBER 19, 2001 <br />COUNCILS CONFERENCE ROOM <br />7:00 PM <br />I. ROLL CALL: <br />Chairman Thomay called the meeting to order at 7:15m. <br />PRESENT: Chairman, J. Thomay, and Board member L. Zolar. <br />ALSO PRESENT: Assistant Law Director, J. Dubelko, Assistant Fire Chief, Klecan and Clerk of <br />Commissions, D. Rote. <br />ABSENT: Board member; P. Farrell. <br />II. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES: The Civil Service minutes dated Oct. 2001 have been submitted for <br />approval. <br />J. Thomay motioned to approve the October 15, 2001 Civil Service minutes as submitted. The <br />motion was seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously approved <br />III. REPORTS: <br />There were 9 correspondences received and 2 correspondences sent out for the commissioners to <br />review. <br />J. Thomay indicated that most of the correspondences received or sent had to do with the hearing <br />and would be discussed under hearing. The commission has also received notice that the dollar <br />amount paid for new hires would be increasing next year. <br />J. Thomay motioned to approve the correspondences as submitted. The motion was seconded by L. <br />Zolar and unanimously approved. <br />IV. OLD BUSINESS: <br />Commissioners need to resume reviewing Fire Candidate Timothy Gates hearing regarding his eye <br />exam results. Commissioners need to make a motion on whether or not Mr. Gates name will remain <br />on the certified entry level Fire Fighters list. Note: this hearing is a continuation from September <br />17, 2001 and October 15,2001 Civil Service meetings. <br />Mr. Thomay indicated that this is a continuation of a hearing regarding Fire Candidate Gates eye <br />exam. Since the last meeting the board received documentation from Ohio State University in <br />Columbus and a statement from Doctor Hershner who first examined Mr. Gates. Ohio State <br />University states in a letter dated October 29, 2001, that Mr. Gates meets the North Olmsted Civil <br />Service vision requirements. Dr. Hershner was faxed a copy of the Ohio State letter and was asked <br />to give a written opinion. On November 16, 2001, Dr. Hershner faxed a letter indicating that he <br />agreed with the Ohio State University findings. He further suggested that Mr. Gates obtain a yearly <br />exam to show that he is a successful contact lens wearer. Note: The Ohio State University and Dr. <br />Hershner letters are attached to the back of these minutes. <br />
