J. Thomay motioned to us the following books for the written test; 1) Building Construction
for the Fire services, 3 r edition, 1992. 2) Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service,
1996. 3) Fire Chiefs Handbook, Penwell Publishing, 5th edition chapters
1,2,3,4,6,7,10,15,17,24,25,26,and 27. 4) Incident Management for the Street -Smart Fire
Officer, 1997. R. Giesser seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved.
Mr. Thomay questioned if new testing dates had been looked into. Mrs. Rote indicated that the
testing company gave her dates that they are not available in July which are July 12, 14, 19 or 23`a
The testing company would be available any of the other dates in July. Mr. Thomay reviewed that
once the new posting is created and posted the candidates must have 30 -days to study. The board
briefly looked at the candidate's letters of intent submitted. Mrs. Giesser questioned what would
be the earliest date possible to give the test. It was determined that July 8th would be the earliest
date. The commissioners reviewed the candidates projected vacation dates and it was found that
there was no dates in July that would accommodate the testing company and each of the 5 testing
candidates. Mr. O'Malley voiced that it is a dangerous practice to try to set testing dates according
to individuals vacation schedules. It is impossible to accommodate everyone, however you are
dammed if you do and dammed if you do not. Ms. Giesser stated "the civil service should not have
a practice of attempting to schedule tests based on employees vacations". She does not want to start
that practice even under these circumstances. The commission should set the testing dates to the
first dates the testing company has available. Mr. Thomay called a recess so the clerk could
contact the testing company to get available dates and make sure a room is available for the tests.
J. Thomay motion to set the new testing dates as follows; Written test Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at
5:30 p.m. in City Hall. The Oral test will be scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2003 starting at
9:00 a.m. in civil service office. Note in the framing of the motion the clerk advised the
commissioners that Mrs. Ramsey from the testing company stated there would be no
additional charges for moving the testing dates. Ms. Giesser wanted on the record that the
dates chosen are dates the testing company had available as they were not available July IOth.
R. Giesser seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved.
Ms. Giesser questioned how the candidates will be notified that the test will be postponed. Chief
Klecan indicated that he would contact each of the candidates to inform them the dates are changed
and that he would post the notice at both stations as soon as the clerk got them to him. The clerk
indicated that she would bring enough copies of the notice so each candidate could have a copy.
V.
