RULE III <br />POLICE and FIREFIGHTER PROMOTIONS <br />Section 1: Promotional Examination Notice: <br />Public notice of competitive promotional examinations shall unless waived by all persons <br />eligible to participate, be published and posted in all appropriate departments not less than <br />not less than thirty (30) days prior to the examination date. The notice shall contain a <br />description of the source material from which the written examination questions are <br />prepared. Such source material shall be readily accessible to examines. Contents of the <br />qualifications for the examination notice should be prepared by the Appointing Authority <br />and submitted to the Civil Service Commission Secretary no less than ten (10) days before <br />the published notification of the examination. <br />Section 2: Firefighter Promotions: <br />a. The promotion of Firefighters shall be made in accordance with the provisions of Section <br />124.45 of the Ohio Revised Code except, that no Firefighter shall be promoted to the rank <br />of Lieutenant who has not served a minimum of thirty-six (36) months within the North <br />Olmsted Fire Department at the time of the scheduled promotional examination. <br />b. No competitive promotional examination shall be held unless there are at least two (2) <br />persons eligible to compete. <br />c. In the event that there are not at least two candidates eligible for a promotional test, a <br />probationary Fire Department officer shall be permitted to take the test before permitting <br />an officer to the next lower rank to take the test. <br />Section 3: Police Promotion: <br />a. Promotion of Police Officer shall be made in accordance with the provisions of Section <br />124.44 of the Ohio Revised Code except, that no patrolman/patrolwoman shall be legible <br />for a promotional examination in a higher rank who has not served at least thirty-six (36) <br />months within the North Olmsted Police Department at the time of the scheduled <br />promotional examination. <br />b. No competitive promotional examination shall be held unless there are at least two (2) <br />persons eligible to compete. <br />Section 4: Nature of Promotional Examinations <br />Promotional examinations including those for the Police or Fire Department may consist of <br />a written examination, an oral assessment or a combination of the two (i.e. written <br />examination and oral assessment). Promotional examinations shall be practical in <br />character and shall relate directly to those matters which will fairly test the relative <br />capacity of the person examined to discharge the particular duties of the position for which <br />promotional appointment is sought. The Commission shall prescribe the subjects of each <br />examination and the relative weights to be attached thereto; provided, however, that any <br />7 05-24-2004 Update <br />
