ROLL CALL:
Chairwoman Giesser called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Chairwoman R. Giesser, Board members W. Hohmann and M. Ubaldi.
ALSO PRESENT: Assistant Law Director B. O'Malley, Safety Director Jesse, Assistant Fire Chief
Robertson, Civil Service Secretary D. Rote and Mr. Torgalkar a student from Miami University
shadowing the Law Department.
H. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES:
M. CORRESPONDENCE:
There were 133 items of correspondence received and 2 piece of correspondence sent out.
Mrs. Giesser reviewed that the 133 correspondences included the applications received for the entry
level firefighter test. The commission briefly discussed the records request for the private contact
information of all applications received. The commissioners indicated they received the Law
Directors memo and questioned if they needed to take any further actions. The clerk reviewed that
a list of names only was e-mailed to the company as well as the name of the testing company as the
Law Director indicated in his memo. The clerk did not release any addresses of the applicants. Mr.
O'Malley advised that no further action was required.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Civil Service Handbook
Ms. Giesser questioned if Safety Director Jesse had any recommendations regarding entry-level
wording in the Civil Service Handbook. Mr. Jesse reviewed that the police would like the Civil
Service ad and handbook to address the issue of the police department and police cars being smoke
free work places. Regarding the agility qualifications which is part of the application process, there
is a concern as to when the certification must be submitted and maintaining the certification for the
duration of the list. Mr. Ubaldi read allowed the wording the Civil Service handbook currently had.
Ms. Giesser questioned if both building and cars were smoke free work places. Mr. Jesse indicated
yes and requested the ad inform applicants that the Police department is a smoke free work place.
B. Preparation for Police Entry -Level examination
Commissioners indicated that they would address entry-level police test at the September 13, 2004
meeting. The clerk was asked to have all documentation ready for review and a proposed calendar
for an entry police test at the September meeting so the commissioners could make all their
motions. She was also asked to find out if Vantage McCann would be crediting the commission for
tests not used. The commissioners asked that tests not be administered on Sundays and to try to
work the dates for November dates so all deadlines can be met including legislation. The clerk was
also asked to find out which testing companies the Police Chief felt met their criteria for an entry
patrolman test.
