March. Kim asked how the commission can help make this gallery special. Keith suggested
featuring a senior artist on social media each day or week. He also suggested including a video
from the seniors. Kim would like the Mayor and the art department chair to do a video
introduction to the gallery and thought the commission could do something similar. The details
will need to be decided at the January meeting.
2021 Planning
Leah reviewed her ideas for potential virtual events. There could be virtual paint and sip class
held through Facebook Live. The participants could register for the event and bring their own
materials that would be readily available. The art subject could be something related to North
Olmsted.
Leah also suggested doing a "grow where you're planted" event where residents would adopt an
area to spruce up. The residents would be responsible for providing the plants from an approved
list, maintaining and watering the area. Due to budget concerns, the city cannot be required to
maintain additional landscaped areas. Kim suggested using flowering trees which could have
high impact with little ongoing maintenance. Leah suggested Brookpark Extension as an area
needing beautification. Nicole added that the event could be used to help the city renew its Tree
City status if done in cooperation with the Service Department. Arbor Day is April 30 so staff
will discuss the idea with the Service Department in January. Businesses may be interested in
sponsoring a tree. Kim added that the Brookpark Road Resurfacing project will happen in 2021
and includes decorative light fixtures and landscaping.
Leah wanted to do something for essential workers who have been working hard during the
pandemic. Janelle added that the healthcare workers are getting burned out and would appreciate
a reminder that the community still cares. Kids could create artwork that would be taken to local
healthcare centers. Leah thought it would be best to provide a simple theme and instructions,
possibly a coloring sheet with a prompt and area for kids to color in. Kim liked the idea since it
would not require a lot of investment of supplies and time but could have a bigger impact. She
suggested aiming to do this by Valentine's Day with a theme of "We love our healthcare
workers." Discussion regarding how to get kids involved, possibly include with principals'
weekly emails or ask art teachers to do with their classes. Will need to reach out to contacts at
local facilities to confirm they would want the artwork and could display it.
Sue thought a mural would be a nice addition to the city. Kim said Cocky's Bagels was
previously interested in putting up a mural on the side of their building so she could reach out to
them. Kim wanted to make sure the property owner is willing to maintain the mural if installed.
Leah thought the mural would be an opportunity to share hope with the community. Kim thought
the side of Jesri Stone could be a good location and Leah thought Biggby may be interested in
doing a mural on the south side of the building. Potentially create a call for property owners to
see if any businesses would be interested in having a mural on their building.
COMMUNICATIONS
Kim thanked Wilma and Jackie for their service to the commission. Current members should
think about anyone they know who may be interested in participating.
