ARTS COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MINUTES OF MARCH 17, 2021
ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 6:31 p.m. via online public meeting.
Present: Keith Behrendt, Leah Rogalski-Davis, Sue Collander, Bryan O'Malley, Janelle Zauner-
Hoffart
Absent: Stephanie Procter
Staff. Planning Director Kim Lieber, Administrative Assistant Nicole Rambo -Ackerman
REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES
Bryan moved, seconded by Sue, to approve the Arts Commission minutes of February 17,
2021, motion passed 5-0.
REPORTS OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEES
Mayor's Art Show
Kim thanked the Commission members for interacting with the senior spotlights on social media
and asked them to leave a message on the Kudoboard. The Mayor, some of the school board
members and teachers left encouraging messages for the student artists. Kim thought the gallery
looked great and the music was a nice addition. Copies of the gallery and messages will be given
to the seniors as a memento of the event. Kim thought the introductory videos created with help
of Parks & Recreation were a nice touch since the event could not be held in person this year.
Grow Where You're Planted
Leah added possible commercial locations that she thought could use some beautification. Kim
suggested setting up a committee meeting to divide up responsibilities to proceed with the
project. Kim sent some possible messaging to Leah and Stephanie to be finalized and Janelle
provided some tree information ahead of the meeting. The committee will reach out to business
owners. Flowering trees were selected because they would make a visual impact without a large
amount of maintenance required by the owners. Kim reminded the committee that this needs to
get moving as soon as possible if the trees will get planted this spring.
The graphic designer made some changes to the logos based on feedback from the last meeting.
Bryan was concerned that the smaller type would be hard to read. Keith thought both logos could
be used in different contexts. Sue suggested adjusting the type to make the letters closer together
so they could be enlarged and using the black outline around the borderless logo.
Public Art: Mural
Keith wanted to make sure the Law Department looked at the procedural guide to ensure it does
not conflict with the sign code. Bryan pointed out that the sign code was thoroughly vetted and
this guide would be completely separate. Kim added that the sign code update ensured the
acquisition of public art was a separate process overseen by the Arts Commission and this guide
is an effort to determine the review process. Bryan is going to look at the guide to ensure it does
