The Parks & <br />Recreation staff planned the event which included an obstacle course, decoration station, <br />maintenance station, photo opportunity, DJ, Kona Ice and snacks. She thanked the Commission <br />members who helped with the decoration station at the event. Remaining events include the <br />Westside Flea and Homecoming parade and festivities. <br />Kim thought the Parks & Recreation staff did a great job planning the events and the <br />Commission should think about what their role will be in future events. The movies and music <br />events had lower attendance than what was expected. Bryan suggested including local artists in <br />future music events. Keith thought the Commission could help provide an outlet for local artists <br />by doing events like the Open Mic Nights. He suggested having the Parks & Rec staff plan for <br />the larger band events. Leah wanted to host larger events to engage with the community more, <br />Janelle agreed. For the Party in the Park events, the higher costs of more popular bands was. <br />offset by the revenue from beer sales. Bryan suggested including multiple types of art at the <br />larger events, such as sculptures or art displays and including local musicians between the bigger <br />bands. <br />Community Decathlon <br />The Community Decathlon was an Olympics -inspired event meant to encourage families to <br />engage with the community and have fun. Ten categories ranging from trying new restaurants <br />and food to playing games and sports were given and residents could choose to do half or all of <br />them to enter the contest. Two entries were received, one of which, completed all of the activities. <br />The prize was a $100 gift card. <br />NEW BUSINESS <br />Barton -Bradley Fields Art Project <br />The principal of St. Brendan is interested in having students or youth group members help paint <br />the concrete barriers that were recently installed by the soccer fields on Bradley Road. The <br />Service Department will power wash the blocks and volunteers will be needed to prime the <br />blocks prior to St. Brendan painting them. The goal is to paint the blocks this fall. <br />Halloween Events <br />The Parks & Rec staff are hosting the Trek at the Rec event on October 29 from 6 to 8 PM. The <br />Commission can have a tent or station set up to distribute treats and promotional items. Nicole <br />provided some options for handouts and the group agreed on purchasing the Halloween character <br />kits made from spoons. Commission members interested in helping can submit theme ideas to <br />the group to start coordinating for the event. <br />The Commission was interested in hosting the Halloween Decorating Contest again. They would <br />like to have a map for members to use when judging the properties. When submitting entries, <br />participants should specify if their decorations look better in the daytime or evening and provide <br />photos of each. A time for judging should be specified so participants can have decorations <br />turned on and ready for members to look at. Leah suggested having Commission members pick <br />
