In late 2020, early 2021, somewhere in there, I took the PRADCO assessment for the lieutenant's
exam for the first time. After performing poorly on that assessment, I wanted to examine why I did
r not perform as expected. I received a 76 on that score.
My first step was to reach out and speak with Dr. Borodkin. At PRADCO, we had a lovely
conversation. He stated that I needed to own my shortcomings and freely discuss what they were,
how I learned from them, and how I could do better going forward.
He told me to quantify the weaknesses and demonstrate how I can overcome them. It was a great
conversation. Dr. Borodkin stated that I was not answering the questions of what my work problem
is. Why not just answer the question he stated? Give the following examples. I'm too empathetic.
I'm not empathetic. I'm too direct. I'm too cynical.
I'm too sarcastic. The doctor went on to say, why not say what the hell you're bad at or what you
need to work on? Put something down.
I need to be self -aware and conduct a self-assessment. After speaking with Dr.Borodkin, I read
several leadership books on the topic to strengthen my leadership skills. I took the advice I received
from Dr. Borodkin at PRADCO. Together, with the learnings I had learned from my leadership
readings, and when I took the PRADCO assessment for lieutenant's exam a second time in 2023,1
scored the highest out of all the candidates with a 92. For the 2023 assessment, my assessor was a
qualified psychologist by the name of Ruth Dubois Early, who was a licensed professional clinical
counselor. I saved all of my questions and responses from the 2023 exam and used them in
preparation for the captain`s assessment.
I used the same strategies I had utilized to obtain my 92% score and updated my response where
appropriate with my continued self -reflection in how I could improve. Using the same blueprint
provided by PRADCO, I used in 2023 on the same questions that I had answered only one year
earlier and I only scored a 76 this time. When I met with my PRADCO assessor, Mike Winovich,
who is a retired school teacher, to find out why I scored so low, I was informed it was because of
the weaknesses I listed.
When I told him that I had been advised by the head of PRADCO to not only list my weaknesses
but to quantify them and talk about what I learned from them, Mike's response was, damn if you do,
damn if you don't. Mike told me he needed to check with Dr. Barachan and get back to me. I never
heard back from them again.
I also know because Captain Walling shared with me, she did not frilly complete the written
PRADCO assessment leaving one question blank because she did not know how to answer the
question. Whereas I completed all questions asked. If there is no penalty for not answering
questions, why are we bothering answering questions and submitting?
1 am concerned that the subjectivity shown in the PRADCO assessment has cost me the opportunity
to obtain the captain's position due solely for following the advice of the assessment center itself
which previously resulted in my score of 92%. I also question the experience and quality of my
assessor. My previous assessor was trained and qualified in the field of psychology and rated me at
a 92%.
The same questions, nearly the same answers, only one year later with a retired school teacher rated
me at a 76%. I am especially concerned when a panel of subjective matter experts, police chiefs and
former police chiefs rated my performance at a 93.89% compared to Captain Walling's rating of
