CITY OF NORT1I OLMSTED BOARD OF ZONING ApPEALS MINUTES--JAN[TARY 19, 1994 Chairman Gomersall called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M. , Ms. M. Boyle, a new member, had been sworn in by the Mayor before the meeting. Present: M. Boyle, J. Maloney, W. Purper, and R.. Gomersall. Absent: T. Koberna. ` Also Present: Law Director Gareau, Building Commissioner Conway, and Clerk of Commissions Oring. Chairman Gomersall advised those present that it was possible that all of the board members had not viewed all of the locations because of the severe weather conditions. Three affirmative, votes would be required for approval. Each case would be judged on the physical situa.tion peculiar to itself so that in no way is a judgement rendered considered to be a general policy judgement affecting properties and like situations elsewliere: ' W. Purper moved to approve the minutes of December l, 1993, as presented, seconded by J. Maloney, and unanimously approved. Chairman Gomersall advised that the Elias Brothers request has been postponed until the next meeting. 1. Shell Oil, 25199 Lorain Road. Request for variance (1123.12). Request 93 square foot variance for total sign area for a business use; request variance to have 2 prohibited signs on canopy; and request variance to have 6 signs on spandxel. Violations of Ord. 90-125, Section 1163.11(a), and 1163.12(j). Chairman Gomersall called all interested parties before the Board. The oath was administered to Mr. Ferrara, representing Shell Oil, and Mr. Moore, engineer who presented pictures of similar signs. Mr. Ferrara stated that they are updating this station so that this station will look like the remodeled station at Lorain and Clague Roads. They will be adding dark gray spandrels over the dispensers and they Frill have the Shell logo on them. The canopy signage will be reduced by 48 square feet even,with the additional signs on the spandrels. Overall the signage will be reduced 50 squa.re feet. AZr. Gomersall stated that he would like to reduce one of the signs on each side of the canopy. Nlr. Moore pointed out that the standard shell canopy has,a single "Shell" sign.and a pectin. The present canopy has two "Open _ 24 Hours" signs «ith a pectin and a"Food 14art" sign with a pectin, so they are reducing the existing signage apd will only have two pectins and two "Shell" signs on the canopy. Mr. Maloney stated ?considering there was a sign an the corner and all the other signs, the pectins on the canopy were not necessary. Mr. Moore stated that this is the corporate policy and that the signs ha.ve been moved so that the one on the east is obscured behind the adjacent r,iuffler shop. Mr. Gomersall explained that the board has been trying to cut down on all canopy signage and noted that all signs on canopies are prohibi-ted. The pole sign`will rema.in. Mr. Ferrara agreecl to eliminate the pectins on the. canopy. Tt, was clarified that there are actually 4 signs, on the canopy instead of 2 as noted on the agenda and it was explained that an 85 square foot variance would.be needed for the sign area without the pectins.
