E _ :
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
PLANNING COMMISSION
NffiNUTES - OCTOBER 8, 1996
I. ROLL CALL:
Chau-mau Tallon called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m.
Present: D. Cameron Alstou, T. Brennan, T. Herbster, R. Koeth, A. Manniug, K. O'Rourke, and
R Tallon
Also present: Assistant Law Director Dubelko, City Engineer Deichmauu, Assistaut Building
Commissioner Rymarczyk, and Clerk of Commissions Oring
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MIlNUTES:
R. Tallon moved to accept the minutes of September 10, 1996, seconded by T. Herbster, and
uuanimously approved.
III. BUII.,DING DEPARTMENT REQUESTS:
1) Chuck E. Cheese, 26104 Great Northern Shopping Center.
Revised proposal to install awniugs on existing building.
Coutinued from the meeting of September 10, 1996.
Mr. Wagner, sigu contractor, advised that the awnings submitted at the last meeting were intemally
illwninated, and the new plans are for opaque awnings, illuuuuated by gooseneck lights. He presented
photos of three other busiuess that have this treatment. The members studied the photographs. He
clarified that the inaterial will be stretched onto an alumiuum framing with the color graduated from red
on the top to yellow to orange. There will be two fixtures for each awuing with incandescent bulbs, but
he did not know the wattage. This system will not light the sidewalk underneath as oi7ginally requested.
It was uoted that tlus fabric had a glossy finish, and the light might reflect off of it. Nrr. Wagner stated
that the fabric could be sprayed to a matte finish. There will also be a canopy over the doorway, wluch
will uot be back lit either. The egg crate lining will obscure the alwninuin framing. Mr. Koeth woudered
if they needed two light fiYtures over each awning. The members have discouraged back lit awuings, but
Mr. Tallon uoted that tlus is still basically a sign. The awuings in the pictures are canvass, but if this
material is giveu a matte finish it will not reflect as much light. Assistant Building Commissioner
Rymarczyk advised that tb.ere had to be 8 feet from the ground up to tlie framework and the one over
the door is shown at 7 feet. The members decided to require the same wattage as was on Tony Roma's
lights uext door. Mrs. Cameron Alston asked if they could eliminate the awnings that would be adjacent
to Tony Roma's since the two different awnings would conflict. Mr. Wagner did not think that the
owners of the business would agree to that. In response to further questions, he advised that they would
not have to move the lettering as noted on the plan, because it would not be in the way; none of the
aluininum will show; but they could not change the color, since these are Chuck E. Cheese's corporate
colors. The members are concerned because the avvuiugs do not match the Tony Roma's colors that are
ou the same building. Mr. Maiuung suggested striping the awnings on that side to coordinate with the
Tony Roma's. Mrs. Cameron Alston thought just eliminating the awning next to Tony Roma's would
help tlus somewhat. Mr. Wagner did not thivk the owners would agree to either suggestion.
Chau7nan Tallon moved that the proposal for Chuck E. Cheese, 26104 Great Northem Shopping
Center, be forwarded onto architectural review board for input on the coloring and aesthetic value of
these awnings on the building, especially in correlatiou with the existing awnings of the other tenant.
The cominission also recommended that the colorings be used ou a matte finish, and would like input
back from arclutectural review board that the lighting will be of the same wattage and intensity as the
existing tenants; and that the curved awning over the door must be at 8 feet above grade.
