?
,
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW BOARD
NIlNL7TES - MAY 22, 1996
I. ROLL CALL:
Chairmau Zergott called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. Present: T. Gallagher, S. Krieger, T. Liggett, M. Yager, and B. Zergott.
Also Present: Assistant Building Commissioner Rymarczyk and Clerk of Commissions Oring.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MIlNUTES:
M. Yager moved to accept the minutes of April 17, 1996, seconded by T. Gallagher, and unauimously
approved.
III. SIGNS: (Added to agenda)
Mr. Liggett would like people who are presenting signs to make a drawing locatuig all the signs so the
board will know where the signs will be on the bu.ilding. The members would also like to have some
pictures of the entire building and a complete address.
The Magic Unicorn, logo on.wall sign. ,
Mr. Woost, sign coutractor, advised that this business is going into the former Convenient Food Mart
near the Park Ridge and Forest Ridge developments, however, this sign will be smaller than the old
Convenient sign. Mr. Zergott is coneerned that the area where the old sign had been removed will show
on the cedar roof and questioned if it were to be re-stained. Mr. Woost stated that this would be up to
the landlord, he only had to present this because of the logo, but the :sign had already been removed and
he had not noticed any damage. W. Zergott stated that the city is trying to get away from cartoon type
logos. Mr. Yager is concerned about the additional "stuff' on the signs and even though this board
discusses it, it never gets removed. Mr. Rymarczyk stated that the board has been asked to review the
logo on the sign, not the verbiage. Mr. Yager believed that the "'I'he Magic Unicorn Coffee House" was
sugicient, and questioned the necessity of the wards "A Different Place to Go" and the logo. He
thought the style of the print indicated the theme, and he thought maybe the logo could be incorporated
into the words. Mr. Liggett believed that the unicorn was a cartoon character, and agreed it was an
intriguing letter style. Mr. Gallagher believed. that it was almost the right of an owner to use his logo.
Mr. Yager stated that, at one time, the board intended to completely elimiuate logos, but then Mr.
Zergott advised that the city only wanted to eliminate the cartoon logos. Since this board only
recommends, they cannot completely reject logos. Mr. Yager would like to eliininate the words "A
Different Place To Go". Mrs. Krieger agreed. M. Yager moved to accept the sign for the Magic
Unicorn with the following adjustments: no logo and that the words "A Different Place to Go" be
eliminated and as long as it fits into the city's parameters for size, they can adjust the lettering to fit. The
motion was seconded by S. Krieger, and unanimously approved.
The Goddess Elite, 23140 Loraiu Road Mr. Rymarczyk explained that the sign had been installed with the logo of a goddess. This is in a strip
center where all the signs are different. It was decided that the words "Gifts for a New Age" were
necessary because no one would know what they do without them. B. Zergott moved to accept the
Goddess Elite sign without the face. The motion was seconded by T. Gallagher, and unanimously
approved.
