k- •'? ? <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />ARTS CONIlVIISSION <br />NIINUTES OF NOVEMBER 20, 2013 <br />ROLL CALL <br />Chairman Brake called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in Council's Caucus Room. <br />Present: Bill Brake, JoAnn DePolo, Brad Doane, Lisa Graff, Lauren Suter, Coletta Strippy, <br />David Wahl, Annie Kilbane, Nicole McClain <br />Staff: Planning & Development Director Kim Wenger <br />Guests: Senior Center Administrator Jackie Chavez Anderson, Ward III Councilman Paul <br />S chumann <br />REVIEW AND CORIZECTION OF MINUTES <br />Mr. Doane moved, seconded by Ms. Graff, to approve the October 16, 2013 minutes, which <br />passed 7-0. <br />COMMUNITY NETWO1tKS <br />The Commission welcomed Jackie Chavez Anderson of the North Olmsted Senior Center. She <br />gave some background information about herself and the Senior Center. The facility is an <br />activity center for senior citizens in North Olmsted and surrounding communities. They provide <br />social services, nutrition programs, educational programs and social events for seniors. In the <br />realm of arts, there is a senior art group which creates and displays work in the building and a <br />senior choir. The Senior Center looks to partner with other community groups such as the High <br />School STTES program, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis and more. Volunteers are always needed for <br />Meals on Wheels and other programs. The average age of seniors at the Senior Center is close to <br />80. Barriers to seniors participating in community events include cost, lack of transportation and <br />issues with driving at night. Ms. Anderson and Ms. DePolo had discussed ways that her studio <br />could support arts for seniors in the community. Ms. Anderson said the senior art group had <br />struggled without an instructor the past few years. Newsletters were distributed to the group. <br />OLD BUSINESS <br />Holiday Tree Lighting <br />Ms. Strippy said the City will purchase a 10 foot tree from Home Depot to serve as the <br />centerpiece tree as Sears was unable to make a donation. Ms. Wenger asked Mr. Schumann if he <br />could coordinate making a riser for the tree and he said he could. Mr. Brake has approached <br />Lighthouse Pools to donate decorations. Springvale would prefer white lights and gold, silver <br />and red decorations. Food and supplies have been donated or purchased. The two smaller trees <br />will be decorated by the Garden Club and Early Childhood PTA. Entertainment is set and Ms. <br />Strippy will develop a run of show to keep the event on track. A child has been confirmed to <br />light the trees; in the future the tree lighter could be called the "Spirit of the City." Ms. Suter <br />researched ornament kits online and found easy and affordable crafts from Oriental Trading. She
