LANI)MARKS COMMISSIOlv <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />MINUTES FOR MEETING OF NOVEMBER 13, 2017 <br />ROLL CALL <br />Mr. Neville called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers. <br />Present: Elizabeth Cardarelli, Jim Dubelko, Tom Dubowski, Jim Morse, David Neville, Paul <br />Schumann <br />Absent: Sarah Egan-Reeves, Duane Limpert, Gretchen Schuler <br />Staff: Planning and Development Director Kim Lieber <br />Mr. Schumann moved, seconded by Mr. Dubowski, to excuse the absences of Ms. Egan- <br />Reeves, Mr. Limpert and Ms. Schuler, motion passed 6-0. <br />REVIEW AND APP1aOVAL OF 1VIINUTES <br />Mr. Schumann moved, seconded by Mr. Dubowsld, to approve the minutes of October 9, <br />2017, motion passed 6-0. <br />COMIVIUNICATIONS <br />I3istoric Preservation Plan <br />Mr. Neville said a draft of the Historic Preservation Plan was provided for the Coinmission's <br />review. Ms. Lieber said that she wanted to have an open discussion about the action items in the <br />plan and to talk about issues on a broader level. She reviewed the Ohio History Connection's <br />Plan which was divided into six areas including partnerships, collecting and evaluating data, <br />education, policy, inclusiveness and messaging. All of these components can and should be <br />addressed in the City's plan whether or not it is organized in the same manner. <br />Ms. Lieber listed several community groups that could be potential partners. Mr. Neville said <br />that nurturing a relationship with the schools should be a top priority. Ms. Cardarelli gave an <br />example of where students were involved in a neighborhood historic preservation project to great <br />success, resulting in engaging their families in local history, as well. <br />Education and messaging could be iinproved through regular communications through not only <br />the Celebrate Facebook page and emails, but also the Mayor's newsletter and Senior Center <br />newsletter. Ms. Lieber suggested changing the format of the Commission's annual report to be a <br />Year in Review, with the intent of recording the recent history in the community in a more <br />accessible and interesting format. The North Olmsted Magazine can continue to be used to <br />feature articles and information about local history and Commission projects. The Commission <br />discussed education and training for Commission members. Mr. Schumann and Ms. Cardarelli <br />suggested resources for such trainings. Topics could include Architecture 101 and a deep dive <br />into the Secretary of the Interior's standards for historic preservation.
