LANDMARKS COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MINUTES FOR MEETING OF AUGUST 27, 2018
ROLL CALL
Ms. Schuler called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers.
Present: Gretchen Schuler, Elizabeth Cardarelli, Paul Schumann, Sarah Egan-Reeves, Tom
Dubowski, Jim Morse
Absent: David Neville, Kevin Kearney
Staff: Assistant Law Director Bryan O'Malley, Planner James Aspery, Administrative Assistant
Nicole Rambo-Ackerman
Mr. Schumann moved, seconded by Mr. Dubowski, to excuse the absences of Mr. Neville
and Mr. Kearney, motion passed 6-0.
REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ms. Cardarelli moved, seconded by Ms. Egan-Reeves, to approve the Landmarks
Commission minutes of July 9, 2018, motion passed 5-0, Mr. Morse abstained.
NEW BUSINESS
18-11850; :Robert & Laura Parrv; 27150 Butternut Ridge Road
Representatives: Robert _ & I,aura Parry, owners; Terry Bennett, Ben ; nett Builders
Mr. Parry thanked the commission for having a special meeting to help keep their project
progressing. They have lived in the home since 1976 and are adding a bedroom, bathroom and
laundry room on the first floor to accommodate their needs as they get older. The addition would
be built to the rear of the home and will have a small connection to the home to have minimal
impact on the house. A six foot by six foot hallway will be installed where an existing window is
to connect the addition to the home. The front and sides of the home would not be affected. The
addition would be one story high and would only be visible from the rear yard of the neighbor to
the west. The home was built in 1917 and is a 2-1/2 story colonial with a north-south gable
running the length of the house. The house is sided with cement shingles which covers the
original four-inch lap siding that matches the garage. The addition will have a north-south gable
and long eaves, around 18 to 24 inches wide, similar to the home. Ail of the window openings
are original, except one casement window that was installed in the kitchen before the applicant
bought the home. The new windows will have the same proportions as the existing windows,
approximately 2:1. All of the doors and windows have five-inch wide trim that will be carried
through on the addition. The addition will have four-inch vinyl siding to match the garage. The
roof would match the existing roof. Mr. Bennett stated that the architectural aesthetics and
construction cost were considered in the project. They did not want the structure to look out of
character from the neighborhood and he feels that it will fit in well, even with the vinyl siding.
The existing shingles are three tab shingles but the addition will have architectural shingles in a
similar color since the roof will need to be replaced soon.
