,, .
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
LANDMARKS COMMISSION
HELD IN OLD TOWN HALL
MONDAY, MARCH 13, 2006
MINUTES
1. ROLL CALL:
Chairwoman B. Lord called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.
PRESENT: Members: B. Lord, M. Davis, T. Dubowski, P. Schumann, L. Thogmartin, T.
Schock, J. Lasko and Councilman L. Orlowslci.
ABSENT: Member: D. Rerko
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES:
Minutes approved for February 13, 2006
III. RECEPTION OF VISITORS:
NEW BUSINESS:
B. Lord addressed J. Lasko as a new member- any requests for additional information regarding
the commission
IV. COMMUNICATIONS:
Commissioners discussed the possible relocation of the Stearns home on the Fire Station #2
property to a vacant lot on Elmhurst Road owned by Ms. Eian. It was discussed that the lot is
not serviced by utilities nor is the property owner willing to dedicate funds to the move. It would
also have to be determined what section of the home would be worth moving as there have been
many additions. Both cost and time are significant factors, as the construction is to begin in a
few months. If Ms. Eian is truly going to donate a lot to save the home she should be asked to
put it in writing. Mr. Schock said he would follow up with Ms. Eian to possibly get her to put
something in writing as he knows someone who might be interested in moving the Stearns home
if the lot is donated.
Commissioners discussed hearing that the Fire Department would be using the Stearns home for
a practice control burn exercise. Mr. Lasko suggested sending a letter to the Safety Director to
find out if the City's intent is to burn the home and note the Commission's objection to burning
the home. Mrs. Thogmartin believed that the demolition was not to take place until May of
2006. Discussion of creating a document requesting the Historical Society being allowed enough
time to go through the Stearns home to salvage any historical materials worth saving prior to the
homes demolition/burning ensued. Mr. Schumann indicated that the letter from Planning
Director Wenger and Mayor O'Grady advises that the Historical Society had until April 15, 2006
to go through the home to salvage materials that can be reused. However the owner requested
more time to vacate the home from the City so there has been no opportunity to enter the home.
The Society would lilce to use the materials taken from the home to reconstruct a schoolhouse at
the Frostville Museum. As far as the carriage house it is the intent of the Historical Society to
convert it into bathrooms for the museum. He would need time to get the volunteers and
arrange times to access the home. All utilities would need to be turned off and any asbestos
would need to be removed prior to the Historical Society entering the home. The first visit would
be to see what or if anything is worth salvaging then determine the amount of volunteers and
amount of time needed to get the materials out and have a place to store them. Going by his first
wallc though of the home he believes that the only materials worth salvaging are those in the
