LANDMARKS COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MEETING MIIVUTES FOR JULY 13, 2009
ROLL CALL
Mr. Schumann called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. in Council Chambers and Mr. Dubowski
led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Present: Paul Schumann, Tom Dubowski, Maryellen Davis, John Lasko, Dale Thomas,
Larry Orlowski, Thomas Schock
Absent: Don Rerko, Jeff Herwick
Staff: Planning Director Kim Wenger, Secretary Tricia Granfors
REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF 1VIINUTES
Mr. Dubowski noted a typographical error on page 3. Ms. Davis moved, seconded by Mr.
Dubowski, to approve the June 8, 2009 minutes as corrected, which were unanimously
approved. Mr. Schock abstained.
OLD BiTSINESS
Certified Local Government Training (June 11, 2009)
Ms. Wenger said much of the presentation reinforced what the City submitted through its recent
CLG application process. The City has met the criteria Mr. Harper presented, and it was a good
refresher. The information on the grant program was helpful and useful, along with the
resources available on the website. Mr. Schumann said it was rewarding to know the
recommended methods and processes presented by Mr. Harper match those of the Landmarks
Commission. It was a confidence builder.
Cemetery Imnrovement Proiect
Ms. Wenger reviewed the subjects covered in the July 13 cemetery committee meeting including
the gravestone restoration workshop, the use of CLG grants, fundraising ideas such as partnering
with Dover Players, pancake breakfasts, wine tastings, walking tours, historic character
portrayals, historic plays, and murder mystery events. How the GNMMTP plan can benefit the
cemetery improvements was also discussed as it includes Butternut Ridge Road improvements
including a bike path and connecting green spaces in the City. Ms. Wenger invited the
Landmarks Commission members to attend the Public Meeting on July 29, 6:30 p.m. at the
library. She hopes to get the message out to community groups and encourage their members to
become involved. Mr. Schumann asked if being awarded one grant helps to obtain grants from
other organizations. Ms. Wenger said if you meet grant criteria and are judged funding-worthy
by one organization, others may find you funding-worthy as well. The award of one grant can
create syilergy making other grants become possible or serving as a local match.
