t ,-
- - , - CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!"
BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS
MINUTES - OCTOBER 1, 1998
@ 7:30 P.M. IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS
"DUE TO A TECHNICAL ERROR NO NIINUTES WERE RECORDED
THE MINUTES ARE SUMMARIZED FROM THE ASSISTANT CLERKS NOTES"
1. ROLL CALL:
Chairman Gomersall called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
PRESENT: R. Gomersall, W. Kremzar, J. Konold, T. Koberna, and J. Maloney.
ALSO PRESENT: Law Director Gareau, Building Commissioner Conway, and Assistant
Clerk of Commissions Rote.
II. DISPOSITION OF MIlVUTES: J. Konold moved to approve the September 10,1998
minutes. The motion was seconded by T. Koberna and unanimously approved.
Chairman Gomersall advised that each case would be judged on the physical situation peculiar to
itselt so that in no way is a judgment rendered considered to be a general policy judgment affecting
properties and like situations elsewhere.
1) Star Bank: 4700 Great Northern Blvd.: ,
Request for variance (1123.12). Proposal for sign package.
Request the following variance(s):
1). A 32 Square foot variance for a business building.
Violation of Ord. 90-125, Section 1163.11 (c).
Note: Board of zoning appeals granted a building sign variances on 28 Feb., 1996, and 7 May,
1998. Went before Board of zoning appeals meeting dated 9/10/98 and was tabled until Giant
Eagle's signage is addressed.
Chairman Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. The oath was administered to Mr.
Jorbach, and Mr. Petter. Mr. Gomersall suggested the board still doesn't know what Giant Eagle
will do, their letters do not address what was asked of them. Mr. 7orbach indicated that they were
not affiliated with Giant Eagle. Mr. Gomersall indicated he would like to see the size of the new sign
to be no more then 24 square feet. Mr. Jorbach submitted a new drawing for a sign that would be
24 square feet and indicated they could use the new size. Mr. Gomersall indicated if you,go with the
24 square feet sign we can give you the variance you need, but if you don't then the 32 square feet
will be denied. W. Petter asked is a variance even needed for the 24 square foot sign. Mr. Conway
suggested Star Bank would need a 24 square foot variance because the total square footage for the
building will be over what is allowed. Law Director Gareau reviewed the two letters submitted by
Giant Eagle. It is suggested that Giant Eagle is in favor of the Star Bank sign request, and they have
suggested they have no plans to modify their sign that is there now. W. Gareau suggested if they
come back complaining they need a bigger sign because of what is granted to Star Bank you would
have a right to just turn them down, because you tried to address the matter before it could become
a problem. They have made no attempt to speak up on their own behalf. W. Petter indicated a 24'
square foot sign- would be used if the variance was granted.
