f •`
?
CITY OF NORTH OLIVISTED
1;? ?"TOGETHER WE CAN MAIKE A DIFFERENCE!"
" LANDMARKS COMIVIISSION
" MINUTES - APRIL 14, 2003 IN OLD TOWN HALL
7:00 P.M.
ROLL CALL: Chairman Lang called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
PRESENT: J. Lang, P. Barker, T. Dubowski, M. Davis, and L. VanAuken
ABSENT: B. Lord, G. Corell, K. O'Rourke and J. Dailey
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES: The Landmarks Commission minutes from the
March 10, 2003 meeting have been submitted for approval.
Mrs. VanAuken pointed out there was a problem with the audiotape at the March meeting. She said that
perhaps it was difficult to hear who was speaking. Mrs. VanAuken indicated the minutes reflect that
she seconded a motion to approve the February minutes. She was not present at the March meeting, so
she could not have seconded the motion.
M. Davis made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. The motion was seconded by T.
Dubowski and unanimously approved.
III. RECEPTION OF VISITOR5: Donald Stalter, Timothy Ulewicz
IV. NEW BTISINES5:
Donald Stalter, 27537 Butternut Ridge - Resident is unofficially seeking information from the
Commission regarding possible work to be done on his home
Mr. Stalter addressed the board and indicated that he needs to replace his roof. He would like to change
the color and he would like to go to the architectural style that gives a three-dimensional look to the
roof. He would darken the roof and is looking for some ideas with regard to the historic look of the
hoine. He then shared some rough sketches with the board members. He said some of his ideas
involved the use of timber frame. He also considered having a front porch added to the front that would
only be the width of his living rooin. He referred to the sketches. His original intent is to have room for
a couple of chairs on the porch but if it is going to cost too much, he will simply move forward with re-
roofing the house. Mr. Lang gave some background on the house and indicated it was built in 1959
according to MetroScan. It is a rectangular, brick ranch with a hip roof. The proposed change would be
to add a gable over the front porch extending out toward Butternut. Mrs. Davis commented that it
would make the house far more interesting as it is very plain right now. Mr. Stalter said he originally
thought of doing a stone fireplace. He said there is a home on Mastick that had a timber frame addition
put on a few years back and they have a beautiful two-way stone fireplace. The addition is actually
larger than the original home. His plans would be to consider putting a great room off the back and he
likes the idea of a timber frame structure. He would try to put a very small porch on that would not
distract from the garage. He considered raising the roof line in that section so he would not have the
valleys end up right at the gutter line, because of snow problems. They reviewed his sketches. Mr.
Stalter said he is just looking for ideas and is very interested in preserving the look of the neighborhood.
He indicated he is aware he would need to bring roof samples to the board. He asked if brick samples
would also be required. He said the very basic work he would do is to re-roof it. He would re-do the
entire hip roof with no structural changes to the roof. Mr. Lang asked him to confirm the type of
shingle to be used. Mr. Stalter said it would be the architectural shingle in a different color. The second
thing to consider would be some structural addition to make a gable roof that would give him a slight
overhang. He said he considered the possibility of putting in a couple of columns. He has a two-foot
overhang that wraps the entire structure. It is shallower in the front of the garage door because of how it
