CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF DECEMBER 19, 2018
6:30PM
ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. in Council's Caucus Room.
Present: Jackie Chavez Anderson, Janelle Zauner, Laura Simna, Stephanie Procter, Keith
Behrendt
Absent: Leah Rogalski Davis, Wilma Kepperley, Jennifer Scofield, Sue Collander, Annie
Kilbane
Staff. Planner James Aspery
REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES
Keith moved to approve the Arts Commission minutes of October 17, 2018, seconded by Laura,
motion passed unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS
Open Mic Night at Springvale Coffeehouse I October 18
James' event recap was reviewed and discussed. It was agreed that the performance quality was
satisfactory, but more performer diversity should be sought for future events. Laura shared that
most of the performers were arranged by host Bob Sammon and attracted many of their
followers. Keith and Laura suggested conducting direct outreach to achieve a more diverse
lineup, including local music schools, high school band and choir students and local church
groups. Other comments from members addressed the slightly lower turnout, large quantity of
leftover pastries and need to reinforce a family -friendly theme across all performers. Keith noted
that the size of the clubhouse could present an issue as the event grows and attracts larger
audiences, but the current format is working well. He added that more residents should be made
aware of the event beyond social media and rack cards. The topic of an emcee was discussed,
with Keith suggesting resident and school board member Terry Groden as a potential person who
would be a good fit. He and Stephanie will coordinate outreach to Mr. Groden for a future event.
It was agreed that the event is gaining momentum and is worth continuing into 2019.
North Olmsted Noel I December 2
Jackie thanked the group for their hard work in making the 2018 event another success. She
requested that all crafts refrain from using glitter, with Arts Commission members checking to
make sure that this rule is enforced throughout the event. Janelle suggested providing craft
vendors with guidelines before the event. Jackie said the trees in the Senior Center should be
plugged in in future years. She felt the food selection was good, the s'mores kits are becoming
very popular and the event has been growing in popularity in recent years. Laura suggested
adding more photo -worthy decorations around the actual event site as opposed to just along
Lorain Road. Keith agreed and suggested reworking event signage so that it is easier to use and
install the day of the event. James asked members to come up with decorations ideas for Lorain
Road and the event site to discuss at the January meeting.
