CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" <br />CIVII, SERVICE COMMISSION <br />MINUTES - JUNE 15,1998 <br />7:00 P.M. <br />I. ROLL CALL: <br />THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION OF JUNE 15, 1998, <br />WILL NOW COMMENCE, PRESENT ARE: Chairman E. Cummings, Commissioners L. Zolar, <br />and J. Thomay. <br />ALSO PRESENT: Safety Director T. Jenkins, Assistant Fire Chief B. Smith, and Assistant Clerk of <br />Commissions D. Rote. <br />H. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES: E. Cummings motioned to except the May 18,1998 minutes once <br />the two typographical errors are corrected. The motion was seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously <br />approved. <br />in. REPORTS: <br />A) There were 16 correspondences received and sent. E. Cummings motioned to accept the <br />correspondences as submitted. The motion was seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously <br />approved. <br />IV. OLD BUSINESS: <br />A) The results of the written firefighters examination that was given on May 28, 1998 needs to be <br />revealed, if they have been received by the date of the meeting. Mr. Cummings reviewed the <br />candidates written exam report. Mr. Cummings stated there were 98 candidates who took the <br />Firefighters written exam, each candidate must score 70% or higher to participate in the agility <br />test. Out of the 98 candidates who took the written test 6 failed, and 92 passed. Out of the 92 <br />candidates that passed the written exam the 25 top scoring candidates will go on to take the <br />agility test on August 15, 1998. Mr. Cummings asked Assistant Chief Smith if he felt having 25 <br />names on the eligibility list would be enough. Mr. Smith suggested 25 names would be adequate. <br />We need to certify the report which has the names and'scores of the 92 candidates that passed <br />the written exam. <br />J. Thomay motioned to certify the Firefighters exam results. The motion was seconded by E. <br />Cummings, and unanimously approved. Motion carried. <br />B) The recommended change to include a copying fee in the Civil Service handbook chapter 1 <br />section 4 paragraph 7 needs to be reviewed. Note: It has been suggested that the vote to add this <br />change should be made at the same time the other recommendations are voted on. Mr. Thomay <br />read aloud the proposed wording to be added in the Civil Service handbook. Mr. Thomay <br />inquired about what Civil Service documents are considered open to the public. Mr. Cummings <br />stated the Civil Service handbook, and minutes. If there is ever a question whether or not the <br />public is entitled to a document requested, then the Civil Service office will seek the law <br />departments opinion before releasing a copy of the document in question. Mr. Thomay <br />suggested adding another paragraph so the minutes and documents fee would be separate from <br />the manual fee. We. could change section 4, paragraph 8 to be paragraph 9, and put the new <br />wording as paragraph 8. The clerk requested input on the wording for the proposed new <br />paragraph. Mr. Cummings asked Safety Director, Jenkins his opinion regarding separating the <br />
