CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED "TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MINUTES — NOVEMBER 20, 2000 7:00 PM I. ROLL CALL: Chairman Thomay called the meeting to order at 7: l Opm. PRESENT: Chairman J. Thomay, Board Members, L. Zolar and P. Farrell. ALSO PRESENT: Asst. Civil Service Secretary, S. Solomon. II. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES: The Civil Service minutes of October 16, 2000 have been submitted for approval. J. Thomay motioned to approve the October 16, 2000, Civil Service minutes as written. The motion was seconded by P. Farrell and unanimously approved. III. REPORTS: 1) There were 6 correspondences received and I sent. Mr. Thomay reviewed each of the correspondences that were sent and received. L. Zolar motioned to approve the correspondences as submitted. The motion was seconded by J. Thomay and unanimously approved. IV. OLD BUSINESS: 1) Dr. Larry Borodkin with Management Psychologists to Business & Industry will be present to review what PRADCO Company does and how they can benefit the City of North Olmsted. At this time the clerk announced that Dr. Borodkin called the office that day and cancelled his appearance at the meeting that night. 2) The Police and Fire Department would like to address the Commission regarding possible changes in the Civil Service Handbook. Captain Kevin Whelan with the Police Department was present to address the board. Currently they are supplied 5 names for hiring from their eligibility lists. They hire only one person, out of the five persons they are supplied. They would like to expand that list to ten names. The reason being is that they are the only department that does five, the remainder are doing ten names at a time. They certainly have the ability and the time to do backgrounds on ten individuals as well.as polygraphs. Expanding the list would extend their ability to find the best -qualified candidate. It gives thein five more people to work with. On the last list they ran into some really unique
