CITE' OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />"TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" <br />CIVIL. SERVICE COMMISSION <br />MINUTES— JUNE 18, 2001 <br />7:00 PM <br />1. ROLL CALL: <br />Chairman, Thomay-called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. <br />PRESENT: Chairman, J. Thomay, Board members; L. Zolar, and P. Farrell. <br />ALSO PRESENT: Assistant Law Director, J. Dubelko, Fire Chief, Bak and Civil Service <br />Secretary, D. Rote. <br />II. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES: The Civil Service minutes dated May 21, 2001 have been <br />submitted for approval. <br />P. Farrell motioned to approve the May 21, 2001 Civil Service minutes as written. The motion <br />was seconded by J. Thomay and unanimously approved. <br />III. REPORTS: <br />There were 14 correspondences sent and nine correspondences received some of which are <br />addressed under old business and new business. <br />L. Zolar motioned to accept the correspondences as submitted. The motion was seconded by P.. <br />Farrell and unanimously approved. <br />IV. OLD BUSINESS: <br />1. Commissioners need to review Fire candidate David Stein's Eye exam results and make a motion <br />as to whether or not his name should be removed from the certified list. Note: Fire candidate <br />Stein is present to show why he feels his name should not be removed. <br />Mr. Thomay read aloud from the Civil Service Handbook, the vision requirements. The board <br />received two letters from Dr. Hershner the first letter dated May 23, 2001 indicating that Mr. <br />Stein has a mild red green defect that was noted. He passed all appropriate tests for fire fighter, <br />except for the color vision test, which he has a mild color defect. Copies of the Civil Service <br />vision requirements were faxed to Dr. Hershner so that he could view the requirements and <br />render an opinion as to whether or not Mr. Stein met the Civil Service vision requirements. In <br />the second letter dated May 31, 2001 Dr. Hershner stated that Mr. Stein does not meet the Civil <br />Service requirements. Chairman Thomay invited Mr. Stein to present his evidence as to why he <br />should have passed the eye exam. Mr. Stein indicated that he discussed his mild color deficiency <br />of green and red with Dr. Hershner as he has always had the deficiency. He then suggested that <br />Dr. Hershner told him that as the color deficiency was mild enough that it would not be a <br />problem with the job. He further indicated that Dr. Hershner suggested he go to the Ohio <br />Medical Center to see a doctor there as they do specific testing for color vision. Mr. Stein <br />indicated that on his own he went to the Ohio Medical Center. He was seen by Dr. Cynthia <br />Green who stated in a letter that Mr. Stein possessed a moderate deutanomalous defect, which <br />meets the specified criteria and should not interfere with his job requirements.
