- 1%
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
RESOLUTION NO. 2000-142
BY: COUNCILMAN THOMAS O'GRADY
A RESOLUTION ENCOiJRAGING CONGRESS TO PASS
HOUSE BILLS 3883 AND 3377, WHICH WOULD
REQUIRE LABELING OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED
FOODS AND THAT THE FEDERAL FOOD AND DRUG
ADMINISTRATION (FDA) OBTAIN INFORMATION
FROM MANUFACTURERS OF GENETICALLY
ENGINEERED FOODS RELATING TO THE SAFETY OF
SUCH FOODS, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, genetically engineered foods have not yet been proven safe to
consumers and are not subject to testing by any federal agency; and
WHEREAS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires only that
companies producing such genetically engineered foods state, on the "honor system,
that such foods are safe with no further testing required; and
WHEREAS, a number of bioengineers and scientists have stated that the
technology of genetically engineered foods is clearly different from traditional methods
and could lead to a host of undesirable health and environmental problems; and
WHEREAS, such technology further has potential negative effects in genetic
cross-pollination of beneficial plants, insects and other fragile ecosystems; and
WHEREAS, the Congress has previously required that food additives be
analyzed for their safety prior to their placement on the market, and adding new genes
into a food should be considered adding a food additive, thus requiring an analysis of
safety factors; and
WHEREAS, there are currently pending in the U.S. House of Representatives
HB 3377, which would require companies to label foods which have been genetically
engineered, and HB 3883, which would require the FDA to acquire information from
manufacturers of genetically engineered foods relating to the safety of such foods; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of this Council to express its support of HB 3377
and HB 3883, and to urge Congress to pass these two bills;
