<br />-1 <br />? <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2000-122 <br />BY: COUNCILMAN MCKAY <br />A RESOLUTION EXTENDING SUPPORT FOR THE <br />PURPOSE OF INCREASING FUNDING IN THE AREA OF <br />RESEARCH AND TREATMENT OF DEMENTIA AND <br />ALZHEIMER' S DISEASE, AND DECLARING AN <br />EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, four million people in the United States are stricken with dementia <br />and Alzheimer's disease; and <br />WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is predicted to double in the next 25 years; and <br />WHEREAS, Alzheimer's will create a major threat to the American health care <br />systems including Medicare and Medicaid; and <br />WHEREAS, Alzheimer's places a terrific burden and responsibility on the <br />caregivers; and <br />WHEREAS, the Caregivers Army, a group founded for the benefit of <br />Alzheimer victims and caregivers, intends to present a petition to the Congressional <br />Alzheimer's Task Force on September 21, 2000, urging that research efforts to find a <br />cure for this disease be increased and that more help be provided to the caregivers who <br />bravely sacrifice their time and energies caring for Alzheimer's victims; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council desires to show its support for the efforts of the <br />Caregivers Army by urging the federal government to increase funding for research and <br />treatment of Alzheimer's disease and dementia; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCII. OF THE <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF <br />OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Council of the City of North Olmsted supports and <br />hereby requests that there be an increase in federal funding for dementia and <br />Alzheimer's research and treatment, and further urges the State of Ohio to join in the <br />effort to petition for and seek an increase in federal funding for these areas of inedical <br />research.
