.r ? <br />Project Understanding 1-7 <br />?Metcalf & Eddy <br />PROJECT UNDERSTANDING <br />The 2000 Dewatering Centrifuge Project is one of a series of projects that have been <br />implemented and will be implemented at the North Olmsted WWTP that will result in increased <br />treatment capaCity and performance improvements while maintaining the present rate structure <br />for the City's residents. M&E has worked together with the WWTP staff in implementing <br />several of these projects, as described elsewhere in this proposal. <br />Changing from thermal conditioning and vacuum filtration to centrifuge dewatering will yield <br />several benefits to the WWTP operation: <br />• Reduce in plant recycle loads, simplifying aeration system and activated sludge <br />operations. <br />• Reduced sludge processing chemical and power requirements. <br />• Reduce odor complaints from sludge thermal conditioning. <br />• Reduced sludge disposal maintenance requirements. <br />• Recover building space for other needed functions. <br />• Allow potential of future production of a lime-stabilized sludge. <br />Working together with the WWTP staff, M&E's experience in centrifuge applications will <br />continue to make a difference for the City of North Olmsted. <br />l. Our team has experience in evaluating and mitigating odors from centrifuge installations. <br />Some sludge conditioning polymers have proven to generate odors during hauling of <br />centrifuge dewatered sludge. <br />2. M&E staff assigned to this project have experience in preparing updated drawings facilities <br />at the North Olmsted WWTP, similar to the efforts required to prepare updated drawing of <br />the yard piping area. Phasing of yard work will depend on the updated drawings defining <br />existing pipe locations, which pipes have been abandoned in place, and which pipes have <br />been removed. <br />3. Incorporating ease of maintenance considerations in arranging centrifuge layouts will be <br />important in the North Olmsted installation, similar to layout considerations implernented at <br />M&E's other centrifuge design projects. The existing space available at the sludge loadout <br />building will require careful consideration for equipment locations and required maintenance <br />space around the machines. Our experience in centrifuge layouts was demonstrated during <br />the centrifuge pilot program implementation meetings and evaluations, resulting in a phasing <br />scenario and significant savings to the City. <br />_ ? . ,.
