CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 95-107 <br />By: THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE C/TY COUNCIL <br />A RESOLUTION RECOCN/Z/NG AUGUST 26, 1995 AS THE 75TH <br />ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S RIGHT TO VOTE, AND DECLAR/NG AN <br />EMERGENCY. <br />Whereas, women today are ab/e to fully participate in fhe governance of <br />the United States because of the woman suffrage movement, a courageous and <br />persistent politica/ campaign; and <br />Whereas, 1995 marks the 75th anniversary of the woman suffrage <br />movement's great victory: ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U. S. <br />Constitution, granting women the right to vote; and <br />Whereas, the fight for ratification began here in 1850 with the Saiem, <br />Ohio Women's Rights Convention; and <br />Whereas, the combined e/oquence and strategic acumen of women like <br />Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Idea B. <br />Wells-Barnett, Carrie Chapman Catt, Mary Church Terreli and Alice Paul <br />combined to lead a non-violent drive to change ingrained socia/ attitudes and <br />institutiona/ bias against women; and <br />Whereas, Trumbuil County resident, Harriet Tay/or Upton, was treasurer <br />from 1903 to 1910 of the Nationa! American Women Suffrage Association, which <br />had its headquarters in Warren, Ohio; and <br />Whereas, tens of thousands of women and men, inspired by idealism <br />and grounded in sacrifice, gave the accumu/ated possibilities of entire lifetimes to <br />the cause of woman suffrage; and <br />Whereas, these visionaries conducted 56 campaigns of referenda to <br />ma/e voters; 480 /egis/ative campaigns; 47 campaigns to influence State <br />constitutional conventions; 277 campaigns at State party conventions for woman <br />suffrage p/ans and 19 campaigns with 19 successive Congresses; and
