Upon written request from the Union, a <br />leave of absence without pay shall be granted to not more than <br />two (2) employees annually for a period of not in excess of ten <br />(10) days per year each, for the purpose of attending Union con- <br />ventions or other Union activities which necessitate a suspension <br />of active employment. Additional absences for Union business may <br />be permiteed as conditions permit., having in mind the volume of <br />work. <br />34. Paid Sick Leave. An employee who has completed-his pro= <br />bationary period shall be granted sick leave for personal ilI'i~.ess <br />or injury as follows: -~ <br />(a) Paid sick leave shall be earned and accumulated <br />at the rate of one and one-fourth (14) days for " <br />each month; <br />(b) Pay for sick leave shall be at the employee's <br />straight time hourly rate (or portion thereof if`~° <br />absent for less than a full day); <br />(c) If an employee is absent on sick leave for more <br />than three (3) consecutive work days, the City shall <br />require the employee to present medical evidence <br />tihat the employee was under a doctor's care and is <br />able to return to work. The City will review the <br />attendance records of employees periodically and at <br />least once in each three (3) month period. If it <br />believes that an employee is developing an attendance <br />problem, it will notify the employee in writing that <br />medical evidence will be required for absences of , <br />three (3) days or less. When an employee's record <br />becomes satisfactory, the requirement of such medical <br />evidence for short term absences will be removed, and <br />the employee will be notified in writing. <br />(d) Employees may use, when necessary, up to five (5) days <br />of earned and accumulated sick leave for the purpose <br />of attending the funeral of a member of their immediate <br />family. The term "immediate family" for purposes of <br />this subsection shall mean: parents; parents of spouse, <br />spouse, children of the employee; brother; sister; <br />-13- <br />
