CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED RESOLUTION N0. 87-22. BY: MAYOR M. YVONNE PETRIGAC A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED'S INTENT TO PARTICIPATE IN BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS OF THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE AND THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. WHEREAS, The year 1987 marks the 200th anniversary of the passage of the Northwest Ordinance and the United States Constitution; and WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Ohio has appointed an official Commission to plan and execute the State's 2 year-long celebration of the Bicentennials; and WHEREAS, the Northwest Ordinance is one of the fundamental documents in American history, growing out of the libertarian spirit of the American Revolution and leading directly to the creation of the great states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota; and WHEREAS, Its visionary and inspired princples became the basic document providing for all of the subsequent territories of the United State to enter the Union; and WHEREAS, Ohio's role in the events associated with the ordinance is unique in that it became the first state to enter the Union under the terms of the Ordinance, that the territory's first settlement was Marietta, and the first university established in the Northwest Territory was Ohio University; and WHEREAS, the Constitution, as ratified, embodies the ideals of liberty under law and was designed to maintain our free government in perpetuity as a more perfect union and to secure the blessings of liberty by consent of the governed; and WHEREAS, the Constitution is the longest lasting written constitution in the world; and WHEREAS, as Citizens of Ohio and the community of of North Olmsted, by virtue of our pride in the doctrines espoused in these two documents, do choose to Commemorate and Celebrate the 200th anniversary of their creation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: 1
