CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 87-22. <br />BY: MAYOR M. YVONNE PETRIGAC <br />A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED'S <br />INTENT TO PARTICIPATE IN BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS OF <br />THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE AND THE UNITED STATES <br />CONSTITUTION. <br />WHEREAS, The year 1987 marks the 200th anniversary of the passage of <br />the Northwest Ordinance and the United States Constitution; and <br />WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Ohio has appointed an official <br />Commission to plan and execute the State's 2 year-long celebration of the <br />Bicentennials; and <br />WHEREAS, the Northwest Ordinance is one of the fundamental documents <br />in American history, growing out of the libertarian spirit of the American <br />Revolution and leading directly to the creation of the great states of <br />Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota; and <br />WHEREAS, Its visionary and inspired princples became the basic document <br />providing for all of the subsequent territories of the United State to <br />enter the Union; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio's role in the events associated with the ordinance is <br />unique in that it became the first state to enter the Union under the terms <br />of the Ordinance, that the territory's first settlement was Marietta, and <br />the first university established in the Northwest Territory was Ohio <br />University; and <br />WHEREAS, the Constitution, as ratified, embodies the ideals of liberty <br />under law and was designed to maintain our free government in perpetuity as <br />a more perfect union and to secure the blessings of liberty by consent of <br />the governed; and <br />WHEREAS, the Constitution is the longest lasting written constitution <br />in the world; and <br />WHEREAS, as Citizens of Ohio and the community of of North Olmsted, by <br />virtue of our pride in the doctrines espoused in these two documents, do <br />choose to Commemorate and Celebrate the 200th anniversary of their <br />creation; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />1 <br />
