_...~. ...~....~.b .~.. <br />o is <br />' APPendix B-9 <br />OPERATOR <br />Nature of Work <br />This is routine and semi-skilled work assisting in shift operation of <br />wastewater treatment and pumping equipment and facilities at the municipal <br />wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations. <br />Work involves responsibility for routine and emergency operation, ser- <br />vicing and cleaning of buildings and grounds as well as a variety of spe- <br />cialized equipment and apparatus in a pumping station and wastewater treat- <br />ment plant. Duties include the operation of pumps, motors, and the reading <br />and recording of appropriate meters and gauges at regularly scheduled inter- <br />vals in and around pump and treatment plants. Incumbents are required to <br />become thoroughly trained on assigned equipment under normal and emergency <br />conditions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assis- «~~ <br />taut Superintendent-Plant Operations and is reviewed through inspection of <br />plant records, equipment and facilities, and observation and tests of plant <br />efficiencies and effectiveness. <br />Examples of Work <br />Reads log book of previous shift operations to determine the occurrence <br />of conditions requiring special attention during his shifts. <br />Tours and inspects assigned pump station and treatment plant as re- <br />quired; checks out equipment and collects appropriate wastewater samples ~, <br />during various phases of the treatment process; checks flow charts to deter- <br />` mine that flow is to desired volume; checks ink supply and flow pens and <br />replenishes and adjusts as necessary. <br />Turns electrically operated pumps on and off in accordance with a pre- <br />scribed schedule or specific instructions; reads meters; changes log and re- <br />corder sheets and makes periodi c entri es thereon. <br />Performs such general custodial work as mopping floors, washing windows, <br />painting equipments, keeping machinery free oS` dust and oil, and shoveling <br />snow. <br />Maintains vigilance over operating equipment and recording devices at <br />pumping stations; starts up emergency pumps and manually resets control <br />devices to maintain pumping and treatment operations during power failure <br />and emergency conditions. <br />Inspects and checks out grit equipment for proper operation; starts <br />grit col l ectors ; removes grit and deb ri s from grit hoppers . r <br />Removes scum from primary tanks; draws sludge and pumps into sludge <br />holding tanks; washes dawn tanks; performs laboratory tests as directed; <br />maintains monitoring watch over operation during shift and assists in the <br />maintenance of shift operation reports. <br />-156- <br />
