I <br />should like to express my opposition to this concept. My reasons are: <br />More tha.n nine years ago, the city established <br />the Depa.rtment of Huma.n Resources (DHR), <br />with responsibility for youth, the older citizens, <br />and far concern of all human problems of all <br />residents of North Olmsted. An Advisory Board <br />was also established to help the DHR with its pro- <br />graming and to give direction to the department. <br />A representative of the older residents has served <br />on the Board and has been a valued part of the <br />Board. One of the biggest projects underta.ken <br />was the funding and construction of the Senior <br />Center which was accomplished in 1980. Another <br />project was to work with the Kiwanis Club to <br />purchase a van for transporting seniors and this <br />too was accomplished in 1980. When the Senior <br />Center opened, it was staffed by a secretary and <br />an assista.nt director to Don Copeland. Since <br />that time, various activities have been occurring <br />at the Center which seem to meet the needs of <br />the senior residents. <br />However, during the past two years, a movement <br />has been underway to create a separate agency. <br />It is my contention that the concept of a separate <br />entity is one that is the work of a relatively sma.ll <br />group of people. It is also my contention that the <br />number of people regularly pa.rticipating in Senior <br />Center activities is a small percentage of the <br />total number of senior citizens.
