Council Minutes of 06-07-2011
bags was not picked up due to recycling requirements and Allied was not able to
handle the volume of trash that was placed curbside.
• Throughout April and May, several storms hit the city of North Olmsted. This
was capped off during the last week of May when a particularly strong
thunderstorm produced heavy rains and hail that led to flooding. While this
spring was one of the wettest in memory, these rain events and flooding have
illustrated to him the need for North Olmsted to increase our existing storm water
cleaning and maintenance program.
• Our current vacuum truck will be focused on cleaning and maintaining the storm
sewers on a daily basis. Additionally, the city is exploring the rental and/or
purchase of an additional vacuum truck. In order to staff the truck as well as
complete storm water projects, it is imperative to specifically dedicate a crew of
full-time storm water employees who will be supervised by a storm water
foreman. Finally, in conjunction with the Engineer and other involved parties, the
city is going to develop a thorough storm water management plan focused on
short term and long term improvements to our storm water system. He will be
coming to Council shortly with the appropriate legislation for these matters. Once
again, while the storm events of this spring were unlike anything many have
experienced, the city must make aggressive maintenance and cleaning of the
system a priority.
• An extended rainy period has also caused the mosquito population to be higher
than normal at this time of year. The Cuyahoga County Health Department has
already been to North Olmsted and have sprayed the areas they deem to be
problematic. They include all of Bradley Woods, all streets running off of
Bradley Woods, McKenzie, Defoe, Florence, Brendan Lane and Park Ridge. If
mosquitoes continue to be a problem in those areas or become an issue elsewhere
in the city, they will return to spray .
• The city of North Olmsted is currently participating in the 2011 "Click It or
Ticket" program. The police will be doing target enforcement during the months
of May and June to increase seat belt awareness and use.
• Fire Department run volume through the end of May is 83 incidents greater than
at this time last year. The increase of 24 more EMS runs, 30 more false fire
alarms, 14 more hazardous conditions and 34 more miscellaneous calls were
offset by 14 fewer fire runs and 5 fewer open burning runs.
• Crews responded to an intentionally set fire in the restroom at the Shell gas station
at Lorain and Great Northern Blvd. on May 30th. Damage was minor.
• On May 23, 2011 local news stations reported a wall collapse at Great Northern
Mall. This was a plywood wall, temporarily erected in the area of the food court
which was blown over by high winds.
• Proposals for the demolition of the Sunset Oval property are due this Friday, June
10, 2011. RFP's for the demolition of the Charles Road property will be out later
this month.
• The seasonal property maintenance inspector has started in the Building
Department and will be catching up on high grass and other residential
complaints. The Building Department will be monitoring vacant and foreclosed
properties.
3
