Council Minutes of 6/21/94
Mart real estate manager, said that WaliMart feels their building is beautiful, very efficient
and low maintenance and allows them to be a low-cost provider in discount goods and
services. He said that the cost of the building in Macedonia was approximately $325,000.
Mr. Musial said that over a 25 year proration that only amounts to appmxinrsttely $12,000
a year. As a tax write-off it costs eve less. Mr. Newberry said it woulii be about 6% to
7% of construction costs. Mrs. Babas asked if the build~gs in Strongsville and
Macedonia were part of a mall or larger comlalex. Mr. Newberry said that was tree in
Macedonia and in Strongsv~e there were two separate b s separated by almut 150
feet. Mr. McKay noted that he had. ~soken to the mayor of Strongsvi~e and had asked
him how he got a brick building. The mayor said, "You deal tough; if you don't deal
tough, you don't get want you want."
President Boehmer called for the vote on Mrs. Saringer's motion which had been
seconded by Mr. McKay. Roll call: Saringer, yes; McKay, yes; Babas, yes; Lmd, yes;
Limpert, yes; Nashar, no; Musial, yes. The motion passed with six affirmative votes and
one negative vote.
Audience Participation
Henry Reichel, 5654 Cohmaba Road, was concerned about the maintenance of an 18 foot
strip of property adjacent to his property. Mr. Rechel presented a lengthy expl~ation of
the history of this particular of property which came into being when Carey Lane and
Allendale were developed in 1958. Service Director Bohhmann explained that the
property was owned by the City of North Olmsted, and the city was responle for the
maintenance. The regular maintenance schedule has been disrupted this year because the
work crew is short several men. However, as Mr. Rechel agreed, the grass has now been
cut. Mr. Bohlmann said it would be put on the regular weekly lawn cutting schedule.
Victor Jacko, 24633 Randall Drive, is concerned about the Wal Mart store location. Mr.
Jacko remembers that another corporate center had originally been planned for that site
and wondered why it had not been built. He asked why developers are allowed to get
zoning changes that do not serve the interest of the residents. Mr. Jacko is also concerned
about the granting of a curb cut on Brookpark Road. Mayor Boyle explained that the
zoning was not changed for the Wal-Mart parcel. There was a zoning change on the
opposite side of Brookpark from multi family to office district. The Mayor also explained
that the curb cut to be used by Wal--Mart was granted in the late 1980's by Mayor
Petrigac. However, since that time, Council has passed legislation requiring curb cuts to
be approved by City Council. A second curb cut for the WaiMart project has been
discussed but at this point Council and the Planning Commission have said no to it. Mr.
McKay said he felt that, mould a second curb cut prove necessary in the future, it could
be requested and granted. However, he did not feel it should be done at this time.
Eileen Schuler, who lives on Clareshire Drive, expressed thanks, especially to Mr. McKay,
for the 10 feet of brick and the other concessions granted to the residents who will be
living next to the Wal--Mart. Mrs. Schuler feels Wal Mart may be the biggest mistake
North Olmsted has made. She noted that Planning Commission member John Thomas,
8
~.: _
