MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
~,,~, OF THE CITY OF NORTH OLSMTED
MARCH 4, 1997
Present: Council President Boehmer, Council Members Limpert, Lind, McKay,
Nashar, O'Grady
Also Present: Mayor Boyle, Law Director Gareau, Finance Director Burns, Clerk of
Council Seman
Absent: Council Members Musial and Saringer
Council President Boehmer called the meeting to order at 8 p.m. in Council Chambers,
5200 Dover Center Road, North Olmsted, Ohio.
Members of the audience were invited to join Council in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance
to the Flag.
Mr. Lind requested that the spelling of the word "GAAP" financial statements be
corrected on page three of the minutes. Mr. Lind moved to approve the minutes of the
meeting of February 18, 1997 as corrected; second by Mr. Limpert; motion passed
unanimously.
REPORTS
Mayor Boyle: 1) Today's edition of the Wall Street Journal contains afront-page article
about the City of North Olmsted passing the legislation prohibiting the purchase of goods
made in sweatshops. Also, Time magazine is interested in this issue, and we have been
contacted about the issue from various places around the world. Other United States
cities are adopting similar legislation. We are at the forefront of a large wave. Our city
took a major step, and it's being recognized that way.
2) On Saturday, the North Olmsted schools held the first of several meetings concerning
facility needs. There is a good possibility that the schools will have to reclaim Chestnut
and Birch schools. The Mayor informed the school board that, if the issue for the new
library passes, the city will be vacating the old library which is on school property. It is
possible that the city could share that property with the schools, especially if it would
mean saving the taxpayers money. The Mayor suggested that Council members attend
one or more of the meetings to hear the superintendent's presentation.
3) He and Mr. Bohlmann attended the Elected Officials Seminar sponsored by ODOT.
Unfortunately, it was not an informative meeting. Basically, attendees were told that
ODOT doesn't have any money to spend on the communities.
