Council Minutes of 8/18/98
REPORTS
Mayor Musial: 1) Before Council this evening is Resolution No. 98-92, a resolution
designating August 26, 1998, as Women's Equality Day in recognition of the 19th
Amendment to the U. S. Constitution regarding the granting of the right to vote to the
women of America and also opening employment opportunities for women. The first
women's rights convention was held in July, 1848 at Seneca, New York. The first Ohio
women's rights convention was held in April 1850. The resolution declares that August
26, 1998, which is the 78th anniversary of the granting of the right to vote to women, be
celebrated in North Olmsted by designating the day as Women's Equality Day in
recognition of the value of the wonderful contributions made to this country and the State
of Ohio by women.
2) The Recreation Center ice rink roof was completed on time, and the hockey club will be
able to begin their conditioning exercises on time August 23.
3) Homecoming will be held August 27 through August 30. The city has planned an
extensive program. The city and the school system will have a joint display in the
Community Cabin instead of separate tents. Everyone is invited to participate.
4) The skateboard park plans are coming along extremely well. Approximately sixteen
hundred dollars has been collected. DBS Communications, Inc. has donated
approximately a thousand dollars in cash and in kind. The skateboard park campaign will
be officially opened at Homecoming. At 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, a BMX rider
and rollerbladers will give a live demonstration outside of the cabin area. In addition,
bricks will be sold for $50. The donor's name will be inscribed on the brick and the bricks
will be put into the front of the skateboard park. We are working with a major
corporation in North Olmsted to co-sponsor the skateboard park, either in full or
substantially in full. Mr. McKay asked the location of the skateboard park, and the Mayor
said it would be to the rear of the playground area at the Rec Center. It is designed to be
a fiberglass imbedded concrete bathtub structure. It will be an in-ground structure with
the ramps and rails built in. Mr. Miller asked what the hours of use would be. Mayor
Musial replied it would be used during daytime hours and not in the evening. The area
will be secured by a fence.
Law Director Gareau: 1) A lawsuit has been filed against a driver who damaged a fire
hydrant on city property on Columbia Road. The cost to repair was $3,706.97.
2) The attorney for William Prest has proposed a settlement of the dispute. He will review
the proposal and, if he feels it necessary, will share it with Council in an executive session.
3) The attorney for the Aaron Griffith family has asked the city for an extension of the
Statute of Limitations. Two years ago, Mr. Griffith committed suicide while in the city jail
after having been arrested and charged with domestic violence. The attorneys did not
have an opportunity to completely investigate the case and asked for an extension of the
Statute of Limitations. The Law Department had no problem with extending it from the
standpoint of it may have made the case go away. But the city had no authority to grant
this request as the case was being handled by insurance counsel. The insurance counsel
did not approve of the extension. The city will probably be sued in this case.
.,
2
