Council Minutes of 6/16/98
.~ ~. infrastructure, preservation of infrastructure, even some of the issues involved in municipal
~> finance. It was a very busy and enlightening week; and he looks forward to possibly
attending this seminar in the future.
Mr. Nashar reported that on June 3 an accident occurred on I-480 in an area adjacent to
Burns Road and Southern Avenue. A westbound car was hit from behind causing it to fly
off the freeway, over the guard rail and land upside down on the bike path. He believes an
extended guard rail would have contained this accident on the highway. The residents on
Burns and Southern are very concerned with the traffic and the increase of the speed limit
from 55 to 60 miles per hour. Mr. McKay is also concerned about this problem in his
ward near I-480 and Fitch Road. On Monday, June 8, Mr. Nashar, Safety Director
Jenkins and three ODOT representatives inspected the area near Burns and Southern. The
ODOT representatives felt that the guard rails were sufficient and said that the State does
not have the money to install additional guard rails. Back in 1991, he and State
Representative Kasputis had asked ODOT to increase the guard rails and were given the
same answer: no money. However, ODOT has suggested that the city compile a list of
accidents for this area. The city will do this with the hope that ODOT will revisit this area
and give consideration for additional guard rails. We certainly do not want to have a fatal
accident. He is concerned about the residents who live near I-480 and wants them to feel
safe
Mr. Limpert moved to adjourn into executive session to discuss the Moran litigation. The
motion was seconded by Mr. Nashar and unanimously passed. Council adjourned into
executive session at 9:12 p.m.
Council reconvened at 9:32 p.m.
With the agenda being completed and there being no further business to come before
Council, President Saringer adjourned the meeting at 9:33 p.m.
~..-~'
~: ~.
Barbara L.
