Council Minutes of 5/19/98
weekends and evenings. He cannot speak to the cost of the roof, but he does know it will
be more than the original estimate because there is more work to be done. The price
depends on how busy roofing contractors are this year. Mrs. Kasler asked Mayor Musial
to keep Mrs. Szucs and members of the figure skating club advised of developments.
Julie Brown, 5352 Evergreen Drive, a resident for 36 years, is concerned because she
heard a rumor that there will be another lighted ball field at North Olmsted Park. She does
not think that would be a good idea because the residents already put up with a good deal
of dirt, noise and debris. She believes many of the park users are not residents. Mrs.
Brown feels there has been an increase in high activity usage in the park and would like to
see quiet areas so people can walk and enjoy themselves. She is not opposed to the
current activity and enjoys seeing the children, but she is opposed to additional high usage
activity that might occur. Mrs. Brown encouraged the city to pursue the purchase of the
land at Barton/Bradley for recreation use. Mrs. Brown's comments sparked quite a long
discussion with the following comments being made:
• Mayor Musial said he had heard the rumor. He is not in favor of it; and, as far as he is
concerned, it is not going to happen.
• Mrs. Saringer said the property at Barton/Bradley was not purchased because the cost
was prohibitive. Also, the city has a very active hot stove league and she feels it is our
duty to think of the children of the community. She is not saying we are going to have
another lighted field, but does feel we should take into consideration the children and
adults who are involved in the hot stove league.
• Mr. Limpert said residents living near the park have no problem with the children
playing in the lighted field. However, the children are not using the field at 10 o'clock
at night--it is adults. And the residents have had enough.
• Mr. O'Grady said that he felt the Mayor had addressed Mrs. Brown's question of
another lighted field by saying it would not happen. As to the land on Bradley Road,
he asked for the Mayor's comments. The Mayor said he was in favor of purchasing
the property when the previous administration suggested it and is still in favor of it.
Once that property is gone, we will never be able to replace it. He is thinking about
the needs of the city in 20 or 30 years. Purchase of that property and the use of the
landfill area would provide a tremendous recreational site that could accommodate the
types of programs that require lighted fields. Also, the rumor that he heard about did
not involve hot stove but rather adult softball leagues.
• Mrs. Kasler suggested that Mr. Jenkins check out the rumor with the recreation staff
because the sign-ups for the softball leagues often filter through the center. She agrees
that the purchase of the Bradley Road property is a good idea. But there are so many
other issues involved with regard to negotiating that property and with regard to city
priorities that interfered with the purchase at this time.
• Mr. Limpert noted that Council's decision not to purchase the property was not a
unanimous decision.
• Mr. Gareau said that it is his opinion that recreation is of a very high priority because a
city with well developed and well maintained facilities is one that stands out among
neighboring communities. He is in favor of developing our recreational facilities to the
`,' ~ highest extent possible; however, with respect to the Bradley Road purchase, there
8
