Council Minutes of 12/21/1999
NIISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS
President Saringer assigned Ordinances 99-169 and 99-170 to the Finance Committee.
President Saringer reminded everyone that the swearing-in ceremony would take place at
7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29.
President Saringer wished everyone a happy and blessed Christmas and a happy new
millennium.
Mr. O'Grady scheduled a Finance Committee meeting for December 28 at 6 p.m. to
discuss Ordinances 99-166, 99-169 and 99-170. The directors of Finance and Public
Service are invited.
Mayor Musial commented on Mr. Miller's comments regarding his position on the
airport and the potential of his position perhaps putting hundreds of jobs in jeopardy and
also making some inroads on the occupancy rates of the hotels/motels we have in North
Olmsted. If he has misled Mr. Miller, he apologizes. His opinion is that, if we are going
to construct an international airport, that we should not expand the current airport to
accommodate that particular aspect. An international airport should be constructed some
50 miles or so from Cleveland, with the idea then of having high-speed trains from major
cities in Ohio interconnecting with that airport. With regards to the current airport, he
thinks it should be contained within its present mode of operation to be acting as a
regional airport. There is no intent on closing the airport. He would envision that the
concept would be working as it is in Washington, D. C. where you have the national
airport which is within the boundaries of Washington, D. C. and the Washington
International Airport being located some 40 miles away. That was his intent. Mr. Miller
said he accepted the apology but it was not really necessary.
Mr. Miller said he wanted to wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy new year. He
wondered if the Service and Safety Directors had any last minute Y2K issues to bring up.
Service Director Bohlmann spoke on behalf of himself and Safety Director Jenkins and
said all preparations have been made. There will be a significant number of people
working on New Year's Eve between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Precautions have been taken as
far as the radio system is concerned, and the Police Department is being covered by a
generator in case of an emergency. In general, preparations have been completed to
make sure that Y2K goes as pleasantly as possible with no disruptions in service and no
risk to our residents.
11
~ _.
