t ,;~.,
~«
Council Minutes of 11/16/1999
members Kasler, Limpert, O'Grady, Nashar and McKay; Council members Gareau,
Miller and Saringer; Service Director Bohlmann, Safety Director Jenkins, Finance
Director Copfer, City Engineer Deichmann and Administrative Assistant Creadon.
Resolution 99-148 authorizes the Director of Public Service to advertise for bids to
improve the drainage of the Chestnut School area down to Barton Road. The drainage
pipe will be elongated pipe, 36 inches high and 46 inches wide. It will start on the east
end of the Chestnut School property and follow the drainage ditch to Barton Road. All
necessary easements have been approved, and the committee recommended approval.
The committee also discussed the five worst streets in the city in the view of the Service
Director: south Canterbury, Grace, LeBern, Sharon and Dewey. These will probably be
addressed next year.
2) The Environmental Committee met in joint session with the Finance Committee
immediately following the Streets & Drainage Committee meeting to discuss Resolution
99-149 which authorizes the Director of Public Service to accept bids for analytical
laboratory services for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This test is necessary to support
the monitoring requirements of our wastewater plant to the Ohio EPA. The committee
recommended approval.
LETTERS AND COMMUNICATIONS
1) A letter from Karen Masarik. "I am unable to attend Tuesday night's meeting, and
would appreciate this read at Letters and Communication. I am writing in regards to the
article in the Sun News on 11/11/99 pertaining to the proposed Skate Park in North
Olmsted and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. contract. As a parent of a young adult skater, I
am in favor of the park. Not only for my son but also for the other children and young
adults throughout the city of North Olmsted who have make-shift ramps and rails in their
yards; for the skaters who travel to other cities to skate but would really rather be in their
own back yard. This park would give the kids a safe place to practice their sport instead
of business stairs and parking lots. I am aware of all the blood, sweat and tears Mrs. Rae
Anne Thomas has put into this project and am disappointed by the lack of support by city
officials. A few weeks ago I attended a meeting and heard the skaters referred to as
`these people,' and was truly disappointed and saddened in the way the Council has
stereotyped the skaters. These are good kids who want a place to skate and not be
harassed by business owners or police. I was at the skate demonstration during the
Homecoming at North Olmsted Park this summer and I did not see one Council member
there! This is unfortunate, as you would have seen some great athletes, talked to some
great kids and seen what `these people' are about. With this in mind, I urge you to vote
`yes' to the Coca-Cola proposal and let them help our skaters with their very generous
donation of $25,000 to the construction of the Skate Park."
2) A letter from Betsy Roegge: "I will be unable to attend the Tuesday, November 16,
meeting of the City Council and would like to go on record in support of the proposed
Coca-Cola contract with the city of which a portion would be donated to the North
Olmsted Skate Park project. I am a parent of a 15 year old boy who has for almost three
years now been an aggressive in-line skater. Unfortunately, he has chosen a sport that is
different and non-conventional and right now has no place to go to practice what he likes
to do. It is of great concern to me as a parent that when he goes out to practice his sport it
8
