Council Minutes of 5/18/99
customers that sample tastings must be paid for. This new Giant Eagle Store will open
in late July, and the store on Great Northern Boulevard will close. The committee
recommended approval. Mr. Nashar moved to accept the liquor transfer for Giant Eagle
to be located at 27264 Lorain Road; second by Mr. Gareau; motion passed unanimously.
2) The volunteer gun turn-in will be held on Saturday, May 22, and Saturday, May 29,
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the police station. All guns that are turned in will be destroyed,
never again to be on the streets where kids will be able to get their hands on them to do
harm to their friends or to themselves. Hopefully, other cities will become involved in a
program such as this. Mr. Nashar thanked the media for their excellent coverage of this
program.
Mr. O'Grady, chairperson of the Finance Committee: 1) The committee met on May 11.
Present were committee members O'Grady, Kasler and Limpert; members of Council
Saringer, Gareau, Miller, Nashar and McKay; the Mayor; directors of Finance, Safety and
Service. The committee discussed Ordinance 99-60, which authorizes the Mayor to enter
into an agreement for the purchase of two parcels of land located in the industrial park.
The intent with the purchase of these two parcels is to acquire land for the city upon
which will be built a new bus garage serving both the North Olmsted Municipal Bus Line
and the Greater Cleveland RTA. Moving these buses to the west side of town will free
up the city garage located behind City Hall and allow this garage to be used for city
vehicles. Currently, many of our new high-cost pieces of equipment that the city has
purchased must remain outdoor 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This would correct that.
The new garage will house 65 buses and is scheduled for construction start in late 2000 or
early 2001. The committee unanimously recommended approval of Ordinance 99-60.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Michael O'Connor, 25735 Lorain Road, distributed a paper for Council's review and
discussion regarding POW's and MIA's who may still be held by the Vietnamese. Mr.
McKay, who had received the information in the mail, explained to Mr. O'Connor that he
had passed it on to the office of Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Congressman
Kucinich's office will contact Mr. O'Connor. President Saringer explained that
review/discussion is done through committee meetings. She will read the paper and will
notify Mr. O'Connor if it is assigned to a committee.
LEGISLATION
Ordinance No. 99-18 introduced by Mr. Gareau was given its third reading. An
ordinance amending Section 161.11 (Accumulated Vacation Leave) of the Administrative
Code of the City of North Olmsted, and repealing Section 2 of Ordinance No. 90-161, so
as to require that non-bargaining unit employees entitled to vacation leave take a
minimum of five workdays off each year or forfeit days of earned vacation leave, and
declaring an emergency, as amended. Mr. Gareau moved for adoption; second by Mr.
O'Grady; motion passed unanimously. Ordinance No. 99-18 adopted.
~F-_
~:~1
6
