MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
NOVEMBER 21, 2000
Present: Council President Saringer, Council Members Gareau, Kasler, Limpert,
McKay, Miller, Nashar, O'Grady
Also Present: Mayor Musial, Law Director Gareau, Finance Director Copfer, Clerk of
Council Seman
Council President Saringer called the meeting to order at 8 p.m. in Council Chambers,
5200 Dover Center Road, North Olmsted, Ohio.
Members of the audience were invited to join Council in reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag.
The minutes of the Council meeting of October 3, 2000 were approved as written.
Councilman Gareau asked President Saringer for a moment of personal privilege, which
was granted. Mr. Gareau made the following statement: "As most of you here are aware
from recent reports that have appeared in the local periodicals, after consultation with my
wife Karla and careful deliberation with my family and friends, I have made the decision
that I will be resigning my seat from the North Olmsted City Council Ward II position.
Although the reason for this decision has been the subject of great speculation by many, I
want to assure you all that there's really only one reason for my decision and that is, my
commitment to my wife Karla and to that of our as of yet unborn child. There are no
other reasons for the decision, and I think that it would be imprudent of people to
speculate otherwise. So I simply ask that you put those other speculations to rest. But
allow me to explain very briefly. In May of this year, our family experienced a very
sudden and tragic loss with the death of my aunt Kathleen Wright. With her loss, Karla
and I were presented with asooner-than-expected opportunity to relocate to the Wright's
home in North Olmsted. It's an opportunity of limited duration, and it's one that will
surely pass if it's not embraced. You should know that this is a decision that Karla and I
have contemplated for some time. And while we originally planned to move after the
expiration of my term on December 31, of 2001, fate simply didn't offer us this additional
time. We are compelled, sadly, to act at this point in time. With my move from Ward II,
I will no longer be qualified to serve as the Ward II representative as set forth in the
Charter of the City of North Olmsted. As difficult a decision as this was, it was a choice
between service to my community and service and commitments to my family at this
point in time. It's a decision that's not easy to make, but it's a decision that I am
extremely comfortable with, and I ask, and I hope that you would understand my decision
as well. An exact date of resignation has not yet been established although it appears that
I will continue to serve until after the second meeting in January, 2001. At that time, I'll
ask for Council's indulgence to allow me a few moments to expound upon my decision,
