Council Minutes of 9/19/2000
President Saringer recognized Mr. Meczka's high school government class which was in
attendance.
REPORTS
Mayor Musial: 1) A Town Hall meeting for Wards I and II will be held at 7:30 p.m. on
Thursday, September 21, at Old Town Hall.
2) Safety Director Tom Jenkins and his wife Diane have a new baby girl. Lindsay Taylor
weighed in at 8 lbs., 10 ounces, and both mother and daughter are doing well.
3) Two situations happened in North Olmsted that he would like to call to the attention
of Council and city residents.
• Three of our Service Department employees, Scott Burneson, Dave Dunlap and
Dennis Reikowski, while on duty assignment in the city at the location of Maple
Ridge Road on the morning of September 12 saw smoke coming from the roof of a
residence owned by Juanita Marcis and stopped to investigate. Dennis Reikowski
radioed to dispatch at the Service Department for assistance from the North Olmsted
Fire Department while Scott Burneson and Dave Dunlap went to gain access to the
residence to investigate the possible fire. These three Service employees checked the
exterior and alerted Mrs. Juanita Marcis and located the source of the fire in the
second floor door leading to the attic. Using a fire extinguisher on the inside and
spraying water with a garden hose on the outside, they were able to contain and
extinguish the fire and burning clothing in the attic area. Our Fire Department arrived
and were backed up from the local suburban fire departments. It became quite
obvious that these three Service employees, Scott, Dave and Dennis, had averted a
possible major tragedy. Their alertness and quick response saved two lives and the
residence from major damage. These gentlemen are a tremendous asset to the
community of North Olmsted and we are very honored to have them as employees.
• Secondly, Kenneth Hehnen, firefighter with the North Olmsted Fire Department,
while off duty on Thursday, August 17, was driving in his vehicle near Hilliard Road
and Hampton Road and saw a driver of another vehicle in need of help and
investigated. Upon entering the vehicle, a 69 year old gentleman from Lakewood
was in cardiac arrest. Ken began administering CPR and called for help. He
continued CPR and comforted the gentleman until the rescue squad arrived. Ken, as a
trained firefighter, did what came naturally for any of our North Olmsted fire staff
and acted quickly and instinctively due to his training as a firefighter to save a life..
An almost tragic event was averted because Ken was there. We are very proud of
Ken, and we commend him for his service and dedication and commitment to his
profession and for his heroic life-saving act on August 17, 2000. We do have a good
staff of employees in the City of North Olmsted, and we are very proud of these
individuals.
Law Director Gareau: 1) Since the last Council meeting, the Law Department filed a
brief in opposition relative to the mootness issue in the Chamber of Commerce case.
2) The Law Department reviewed a brief that is to be submitted by special counsel with
respect to the Chamber of Commerce case dealing with the attorney fee petition.
2
