Council Minutes of 6/20/2000
• Mr. Miller answered that, when a person holds a certain position of responsibility and
trust, you walk into the situation and that person has respect, but it is that person's to
keep or lose by their actions. The difference the Mayor has made on him is that he
has lost respect by doing just what was described: the exclusion of certain individuals
who are not in favor of things and the inclusion of others who are in favor. That's
made a difference in him. He has lost respect for the way in which the Mayor
handled this. (After a short exchange, it was decided that the dialogue was
inappropriate at this time and they would discuss the matter personally.)
• Larry Phillips, 6381 Barton Road, said he has been involved with Forest School PTA
for 8 years, volunteers as an assistant coach with hot stove baseball, helps out with
the travel soccer team and is an assistant cub master with Boy Scouts and helps his
wife with a Girl Scout troop. He chooses to spend most of his free time helping
children because children will find something to do with their free time. Hopefully,
with his help, they can find something positive and constructive to do with it. The
options are that they might find something not so positive to do with it. At this point,
he would ask that it be considered saving the green space for recreation.
• Jay Hadsell, 25151 Brookpark Road, has lived and worked in the city all his life. He
loves the city and plans to live here all his life. Mr. Hadsell asked how long the
property had been zoned industrial? Law Director said it is in excess of 20 years.
Mr. Hadsell commented that, since he was a kid, he always wanted to have the family
home someday. He asked if anyone in the room could guarantee him that, after the
~ green space is purchased, the city would not use eminent domain 20 or 30 years from
now. President Saringer said they could not guarantee that. Mayor Musial said he
wouldn't guarantee it. Mr. Hadsell noted Mayor Musial won't be in office then--it's
just the facts of life. But he plans on being here for a long time--he has a son who is
just 8 months old. He has many brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces.
Nobody knows what is going to happen to somebody. It is true, something could
happen to him but he is not the only one in the family. He is speaking because he
lives in the city. His brothers and sisters would speak if they lived in the city. When
someone has lived in the city for 40 years, it is wrong to tell them they have to give it
up. Where are they going to be able to buy another piece of property in North
Olmsted that is 4 1/2 acres?
• Mr. Limpert said that's what this is all about--where are you going to buy 4 112 acres?
We are talking about the adjacent property to the Hadsell property. He knows how
emotional Mr. Hadsell is about this because he has shed many tears over the things
that have been lost in this town, such vineyards and fields where children could play.
He has watched residents say, "Don't do this because I don't want something bad to
happen." What they are exactly doing is having what they don't want to happen. Mr.
Hadsell's family has a beautiful piece of property. If they want to be surrounded with
roofs, go ahead. If they want the city to have an inviable piece of property on the
north side of the road so that they sell it off and Mr. Hadsell is surrounded by more
roofs, he supposes that is what is being asked for the city to do. He knows how Mr.
Hadsell feels--he has felt it. We are trying to give the residents what they want.
`''~" Residents have said they don't want people using private roads--that won't happen.
y
18
