Council Minutes of 5/16/2000
residents are for Council to take a stand like this. This is new in the suburbs, but is
'' not new in downtown Cleveland. The major jobs people are proud of such as the
`` Browns stadium, Jacobs Field and Tower City were all labor agreement jobs. City of
Cleveland is proud of these projects and North Olmsted will be proud of projects that
will be under labor agreements also. As residents, they are all very proud and stand
behind Council 100%. When they read the rubbish in the newspaper slandering
Council, it was like somebody tore their hearts out. They support Council.
Alex Rychlik, 27900 North Park Drive:
• Thank you for building much more things out of brick. He is a bricklayer, Local 5.
Wants to thank Council and Mayor for doing the things that they're doing. Thinks
everybody in the room would like to come up and say thank you and shake hands for
what Council is going to do.
John Ferry, 4265 Laurell Lane:
• Resident of city for 26 years. Applauds Council, Mr. O'Grady and Mayor for stance
on this. When he got the post card the other day, it was difficult to look at it because
it was slandering the Council and telling him Council is spending money the wrong
way. This just flabbergasts him. He sees no proof, only accusations. Thanks to
Council from many of the people who are in attendance but will not speak this
evening. Thanks for what he hopes Council will do.
Victor Jacko, 24633 Randall Drive:
• Resident for 23 years. Not a union member, but supports the unions. Over 20 years
retired from the Air Force and worked 15 years with a major communications
company as a project manger. The jobs they quoted had one thing that they always
had to do: prevailing wage. Union labor is honoring prevailing wage. What ABC
said is a bunch of lies. They did not even include a return address, and he looked for
two days for an address to respond to them. That organization and their treasurer is
afraid of one thing--paying prevailing wage.
Rob Perrell, 23902 Gessner Road:
• The reason the ABC is afraid of prevailing wage is because they will have to pay so
much more out of their pocket to their employees and it'll be less padding in their
pocket.
Bryan O'Malley, 5477 Jacquelyn Lane:
• Council should be very grateful for the response of the community. Council looks
over issues and looks for the best interest of the city. They don't necessarily always
agree, but they hammer out the issues. He feels safe that the city is being well looked
after. He has heard that non-union contractors are coming in from out of state with
scab workers, they are prone to use substandard materials that are purchased from out
of state and they are not employing union members from this town. That is
outrageous. Has heard this kind of trend is going on throughout the state. It's a
shame. Would challenge the gentleman from ABC to come up and face the people
and apologize to the Council for the ad that was totally misleading.
8
