Council Minutes of 5/2/2000
John Martindale, 26031 Butternut Ridge Road, said he felt there should be a balanced
view from people in the Canterbury Road area. If the city were to put in this
extraordinary "Roman" road, about 10 feet of property on two lots owned by his wife
would have to be taken. As it is, the city already took 10 feet off one of the properties
when the four-lane bridge was put in. Also, he is concerned about damage being done to
the beautiful trees that run along Canterbury Road. Mr. Martindale believes that the
water lines to the golf course run down the east side of the road. If that is paved over,
those lines will have to be moved, which will add to the cost. He believes that everybody
does deserve a decent road, but this is an extraordinary production to benefit the property
value of a relatively few people. Proportionately, he is prepared to say that he pays as
much taxes as anybody else does that uses that road, and he has some complaints about
trash collection and the recently passed law which banned parking on the hydrant side of
the street where he owns property. We all lose a little on our taxes here and there. He
could think of a whole lot of other things beneficial to the public purpose on which to
spend $600,000.
Rae Spalding, 211 Greenward Way South, concurs with her Viewpoint neighbors
regarding the condition of Canterbury Road. It certainly needs some improvement. The
Vision 2000 and Beyond Committee, of which she is the co-chair, has spent innumerable
hours discussing the future of the city. Canterbury Road has not specifically come up for
discussion, but there are several themes that have been very prominent that she believes
are a part of the Canterbury Road improvement. The first of these is that North Olmsted
should be afamily-oriented community. Many family celebrations take place at the
recreation areas which are accessed off of Canterbury. Secondly, the committee has
found that beautification is important for the city. Certainly, this road which is used by
so many residents and visitors, needs a little more "pizzazz." She seconds Mr.
Spagnuolo's request that City Council reconsider the improvement of Canterbury Road.
Jim Gideon, 6224 Sandpiper Lane, feels Canterbury Road should be repaired and read a
letter summarizing expressing his opinions:
• Canterbury Road was resurfaced approximately seven years ago and is overdue for
repair. The residents were told at a Town Hall meeting last year that the repaving
would be addressed this year. This is not a new issue, but was brought to the table in
1991 when the residents were told the resurfacing was a temporary fix.
• It would be a good business decision as the road is the entrance to the Springvale Golf
Course and Ballroom.
• Canterbury Road is the entrance to the Pebblebrook subdivision and Viewpoint. The
combined real estate tax assessment for the two developments is in excess of
$1,000,000 a year and Viewpoint receives no break for the fact that it maintains its
own streets and sewers.
• The volume of traffic from residents and visitors using the recreational facilities
justifies a wider, more stable street.
• Millions of dollars have been spent in other wards for street improvements over the
last three years.
8
