Council Minutes of 6/5/2001
~~ Bill Sheehan
-~ Steven DeArmon
Brian Jecker
Chris Whitney
Mr. Scouting
Mrs. Scouting
Alternate
Alternate
Alternate
Alternate
Gary Musselman
Linda DeMarco
The Scout Honorary Officials and Mr. & Mrs. Scouting came forward and were
congratulated by City Council, members of the administration and by all present. Mayor
Musial presented Mr. Mussehnan and Mrs. DeMarco with North Olmsted city patches
and also proclamations in honor of their outstanding achievements and dedicated service
to Scouting. President Beringer congratulated Mr. Musselman, Mrs. DeMarco and all the
Scout Honorary Officials.
REPORTS
Mayor Musial: 1) Firefighter Adam Hudak was sworn in on May 29, and Firefighter
James Dunwoodie will be sworn in as a Lieutenant of the North Olmsted Fire Department
on June 11.
2) The Police Department initiated a new program called "Are you OK?" which is
meeting with great success. Another program which was formulated earlier this year,
"The Citizens Police Academy," is set for its inaugural session. This program will be
held on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. from July 11 through August 29. It will
provide attendees with a unique interactive inside look at the Police Department and will
also give attendees a comprehensive view of the wealth of services that the Police
Department provides as well as the training and expertise that the department has
invested in its officers. Some of the topics covered include traffic enforcement, accident
investigation and prevention, detective bureau operations, crime scene and evidence
processing, community policing, jail operations, SWAT team procedures and defensive
tactics and use of force. The program will feature interactive, hands-on demonstrations
of procedures and equipment. The fact that all of the instructors are members of the
department emphasizes the administration's commitment to maintaining the highest
standards of training and performance. A personal invitation has been extended to City
Council members to participate in the academy. Sgt. Mike Kilbane is the coordinator.
The class size will be 20 to 24 members, ages 18 and over.
3) NOPEC has signed an agreement with Shell Energy with regards to providing the
residents of NOPEC with natural gas services for one year. The anticipated savings
varies. However, it's indicated that the savings will be roughly a hundred and fifty
dollars annually with regards to Dominion customers and about two hundred dollars a
year for Columbia Gas customers. This is a one year contract. Shell will provide
notification of the program, hopefully, by the end of June. The customers who are
interested in participating in the program will have thirty days to enroll by telephone or
over the Internet.
Law Director Gareau: 1) The city has successfully negotiated the completion of a union
contract with the dispatchers. The approval legislation, Ordinance 2001-75, is on this
2
